My politics are certainly left of center. I am concerned about the environment, access to health care, excess military spending, US blood and treasure squandered on overseas misadventures, the treatment of marginalized populations in this society, and a number of other things.

What l cannot abide, however, is the way that the far Left has now become proponents of a form of censorship, seemingly consumed with microaggressions, identity politics, "problematic " speech and thought, and a willingness to eat its own for even the slightest transgression.

I resent the notion that l, as a cis gendered white male, represent the sum total of all evil. I believe that free speech is an all or nothing proposition. If a person's speech is offensive to enough people, society will respond by removing their attention from said individual. People are certainly free to be themselves, but they may run the risk of social consequences if their demands for accommodation are too extreme or unrealistic.

Is it possible to be a Liberal, yet be a sane, rational, reasonable adult, willing to give other viewpoints thought and attention, able to respect those with whom I disagree, and capable of expressing my disagreement in a rational manner? Hell, maybe even capable of a change in viewpoint when presented with new, valid information?

I would certainly like to think so. Living in an echo chamber gets boring after a while.

I have a number of friends who consider themselves left of center. When we talk to each other one on one about what we believe, about 75% of topics we agree on. And those upon which we disagree are places where we can still compromise. The division in our country has come from the media that has determined that it gets to choose our leadership. The bias is extraordinarily clear to everyone who takes the time to look at more than one or two sources.

I long for a return to an America where people could discuss issues and find areas of compromise. This whole notion that everybody right-of-center wants people to die in the streets for lack of healthcare and has absolutely zero concern for the environment is ludicrous, but it seems commonplace among those who speak for the left. Note I did not say among those on the left.

Truly you are a man with no country.

My politics are right of center and I agree with you. Unfortunately the extreme left has hijacked the traditional liberal point of view.

Nicely articulated. A pleasure to be with a reasoned and rational group

I believe you are 'normal' in the sense that you are mindful of the environment, and respectful of other people.

I believe the current issue of Left vs Right has to do a lot with what we are fed through the media which gets echo'd through their unthinking followers. Sensationalism is what sells, and the easily influenced are buying it, amd spreading it as religion.

Keep doing whaylt you are doing. Live life by your own values. Don't cave into the pressure of being labeled. I sure don't!

Honestly, I think that most right of center people would agree on a lot of that too. We care about the environment, healthcare, and civility as well. Where we may differ is that the right of center people are very cautious with personal freedom and that always outweighs all else.
But to answer your question, it's absolutely possible. I honestly think that most liberals in the American public are like you. The problem is that the leadership of the political left is becoming increasingly extreme, while convincing their base that the right are the extremists. I honestly think that if the Democrats went back to pre-obama era ideology, which seems to be where you're at, things would be a lot less confusing.

In today's world of identity politics you are now on the bottom rung. White males have no standing on the left unless you belong to an oppressed sexual orientation group of some sort or proclaim disdain for your own race and gender. White males have no place in leadership on the left. It seems that the lefts idea when looking for a new police chief, superintendent, city manager, mayor, senator or any other position of leadership is "anyone except a white male". Grouping people or choosing leaders based on race and sex used to be wrong now its perfectly acceptable as long as it's to exclude certain groups.

You appear to be a classical liberal. The regressive left will label you as "right-wing".
