I am so tired of the marketing companies now making sure all ads have 1 of all the new faces. 1 white, 1 black, 1 Asian, 1 with a shmata on her head, 1 with blue hair, 1 indian... etc. Dont they realize we KNOW they are pandering!
I seriously believe this started back in the early nineties. I don't know if it's still common practice, but TV producers were actually getting government grants for advancing the "right" sort of social attitudes. That's when I stopped watching TV. I flat out WILL NOT buy a product that's aimed at obviously carefully chosen demographics. Really tired of the manipulation.
80% of all commercials on television have a black person as the protagonist, every doctor is female, all “ bosses” are black female or both. Every supervisor on the major prime time series, IE Hawaii 5.0, Chicago Fire, NCIS, NCIS LA, NCIS New Orleans, Blacklist, etc etc. pandering indeed.
Look at The Good Doctor, the only two whites are the young autistic “good” doctor, and the old dying guy, ALL the others are of various degrees of dark and slant of eyes..
1/ most people aren’t you
2/ better that than be attacked for being unrepresentative and have add pulled due to complaints
3/they aren’t you, don’t think deeply about stuff
This reply is exactly why we left fb.
Ever notice how they portray old white guy's?
Yes, usually the greedy Gillian, or cheating husband, or evil supervisor...yes I’ve noticed.
What are commercials for, if not pandering people?
Don't know about elsewhere, but in the UK, most, if not all, actors in toothpaste adds are white women! LOL
It’s not that they don’t know, it’s that somebody in the office gets to say “I helped” without actually doing anything. You even get entire consulting firms based on this nowadays. Easy to say “we’re improving your ad by making it appeal to everyone, and if you question why I did so instead of actually making a better ad for your product or service, I’ll call you a racist and possibly sue.” Check and mate. Problem should work itself out eventually though, because once everyone’s done it for too long, the act will lose its sell. At least I hope so.
It is funny. Is it really that bothersome though and if so why? Obviously the commercial advertizement is trying to draw in broadly and so they represent as broad a spectrum as possible to profit. I have encountered free market enthusiasts here. How would these "pandering" ads not fit into free market tactics of expand and grow. Is not pander the exact definition of what an advertisement has always sold?
If you KNOW they're pandering, you likely aren't who they're pandering to.
Unless you want what they got.
Political correctness writ large...
And once you realize what you are seeing...you can't NOT see it everywhere
