There seems to be an increasing number of folks suggesting that space beyond earth’s atmosphere is actually water, based on several verses in Genesis (book 1, v. 6, 7 & 9, specifically). From what I can gather, these same folks generally also believe we never went to the moon, space travel is a farce, we’ve never left our atmosphere, etc etc. I smelled a few flat-earthers in the mix, so I didn’t dare engage the crazy.

While I am a Christian, I’ve always struggled with whether or not The Bible is to be taken literally, or is more a vast collection of significant symbolism, which speaks to each believer in whatever way God feels will have the most impact on his or her heart. Maybe both—who knows. It’ll for sure be one of the first questions I ask, but I digress...

I’m legitimately curious about this water theory. Can anyone give me the full picture? The bits I’ve heard have been more ramblings than anything solid and I’d like to hear how the science and theology match up, if at all. Thanks!

They are talking about the pre-flood world and it is just a speculation.

I’d like to agree, but there’s some hard core nut jobs out there who believe it in the very literal sense. They legitimately think once you leave our atmosphere, the universe is a vast ocean. I wish I was kidding!

Revealingly, they chose to ignore this reference to "waters" - Genesis 1:2 (KJV) - And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

Here, "waters" exist before anything is created (ie not H2O water).

As for not going to the Moon - we bounce a laser off a mirror that we placed on the Moon and if we didn't go to the Moon the USSR would make sure that everyone knew it. I wouldn't argue much after that other than request from them what information they would accept to change their minds.

Space travel is a farce - Have they not seen "Galaxy Quest"?

Science and theology - the marriage of Athens and Jerusalem. What great times we live in!

See, that’s how I feel about it. I’d really like to hear why they’re interpreting use of the word “water” as actual H20, when in Genesis, it explains the separation of waters, above and below the fermament.

Also, they don’t even have to believe NASA (since it’s apparently evil anyway—another kicker), to believe space is...well....SPACE! Apparently none of them saw Felix Baumgartner’s freefall from the stratopause. Pretty sure his balloon wouldn’t have inflated if there was a giant ocean looming above him. Not one mention of having to negotiate that, when he was prepping for the dive!

Honestly, this is one of those things I’m embarrassed people are having to justify to other humans with IQs above 50. Where the hell did it all go wrong, to bring us to a point where we’re arguing against sky oceans and flat earths? The brown acid must’ve been much more devastating they they originally thought.

You said it, ramblings indeed...

My knee-jerk reaction was “nuttier than squirrel turds”, but I’m trying to keep an open mind. (Ok, 80/20 morbid curiosity and/or sheer entertainment vs. openmindedness, but shhhhhh!)
