Rockin My World
This morning I was sitting here on the couch minding my own business when it felt for all the world like a tiny shimmy-- sort of like being in a boat when another boat's wake goes by-- except faster-- and only about three or four quick little quivers.
My kid, who was having his tutoring session at the time, told me he didn't feel anything so it left me wondering what it was. We do have construction going on outside-- they have our street closed off in front of the building for it. But I'm thinking it would'a had to have been a pretty darned big truck blasting through the neighborhood to rock the whole building like that. And moreover, I didn't hear anything. There was no sound that I heard with the event.
So then I thought "well maybe they did some blasting"-- but that wouldn't really fit either. This is a highly populated neighborhood and they would have to give some sort of prior notice for that and there would probably have been some sort of sound or something...
So I went online to see if there were any other reports-- but no, nothing that I could see. No apparent news of any big quakes nearby or anything.
But I knew I felt something-- and it wasn't very large, just a few really quick little shimmies. But if it was real, somebody somewhere must have recorded it on something. Then it occurred to me that there are seismic stations scattered all around the country. So I found the one closest to us, which is the "Soldier's Delight Station (SDMD) Helicorder Record" (http://www.mgs.md.gov/seismic/helicorder_SDMD.php?channel=Z&scope=W&submit=view&d=23&m=04&m=04&y=2019) and looked up the seismic chart for today (04/23/2019) and sure enough, there it was... at exactly the time I felt it-- a little quiver of the exact same duration. Whatever caused it, I can't say. But it was real and not my imagination!
EDIT: Updated the URL
And where are you located
Currently in the Maryland area.
I felt another one at 1:28pm and went and checked and sure enough, there it was.
@Lindajailbird Possibly. They really are doing extensive work in the street outside of my building. I am quite happy to chalk it all up to that-- except whatever it was they did seems to have registered on the seismograph a half hour away from here! That's some pipe-laying if you ask me!
