Russia has gone Deep Operations Strategy, big time. In several spots along the extensive frontline, they attack the points that are most likely to draw out poor Ukrainian reserves hiding in the second line of defense. When reserves come out through barren, muddy lands and terrible roads to the rescue of frontline units, entire battalions are massacred.

Russians have also figured out a way to defeat the American satellite/recon system. US was sending real time positional data to Ukraine on locations, numbers, types. etc. Russia developed fake "canvas" vehicles that look like a tank or personnel carrier. They roll them out in the open, Ukraine drones or missiles target them, allowing Russia to quickly locate and destroy the artillery, missile batteries or drones
Russian generals have been masters of operational art since Napoleon invaded in 1812. Maybe since they kicked out the Mongols.
