The American colonies sent out envoys to beg for help during the Revolutionary war. Especially to Spain and France.

At Its Core, the Declaration of Independence Was a Plea for Help From Britain’s Enemies

What is amazing is that Jefferson pinned those words as if the US was a fait accompli and as an equal to Spain and France.

The problem is that the Ukraine is not a British colony with a tradition of rights. It is a Eastern European country with a lot of baggage. It is also not the case that the US is an Empire ruled over by a king. For most people the idea of a US empire is foreign to them. American's have always been isolationists and only reluctantly agreeing to foreign wars. WWI and WWII may have changed that but not as much as some people may assume. If we had had a populist president such as Donald Trump it is very likely this war would never have taken place.

Americans and European socialists who hate America often accuse us of being a hegemonic empire and colonialist.

@iThink

I know and basically even the Europeans I have been friends with think people like you and me are more or less as Obama described us "clingers". Even if they claim to be conservative they like their "welfare states" and draconian gun laws. As I have said before I don't think people that didn't grow up with a "frontier" mentality can understand the average American.

There are always a lot of contradictions. Teddy Roosevelt was the symbol of "Rugged Individualism" but in many ways he was also a progressive and dreamed of Empire. I suspect we don't understand ourselves because there is an inherent contradiction between civilization and freedom.

@wolfhnd I suspect we don't understand ourselves because there is an inherent contradiction between civilization and freedom.

The major aspect of Americas uniqueness is that we believe that by virtue of rugged individualism - the supremacy of the individual over the collective - is what built this nation up to become the greatest global (mostly benevolent) most productive, richest, strongest civilization ever known - and likely will never be seen again after it all collapses - however that may come about.
Europeans are almost innately attached to the idea of being subjects of Monarchies. The strata of their traditional culture does not have nearly as many layers as American society. There is a remarkable quality in American societal structure that the Europeans do not have. That being economic mobility. It is not uncommon for a family whose recent ancestors were dirt poor to have risen to the top of American economic strata. I might be mistaken about that but I believe the Europeans don't have that possibility available to them - for the most part.
