Thanks to everyone who gave me feedback on my post about classic cartoons that are now considered to be politically incorrect. For now think I might just do a post or so every week on this. The first classic cartoon I choose is an episode of Popeye The Sailor called I Yam What I Yam. Presumably this cartoon was considered politically incorrect due to the indian characters being portrayed as savages, and of course Popeye smoking a pipe in which one scene a group of ducks following him inhale the smoke from his pipe. Let me know what you think, politically incorrect or just a cartoon for fun?
Actually cartoons from the beginning were full of social and political commentary ... and were supposed to be understood by the adults who watched them ... but it was presented as “Comic Relief”.
Most of the characters were odd ... funny ... to attract the interest of kids as well.
You have to keep in mind that many of the early characters originally started out as Comic Books or Newspaper Comics where at heart they were always commentaries ... even if they were dressed up to be ... clowns.
