Raises for me not for thee . As it doled out funds across the federal government, Congress also increased spending on itself. The bill would raise office budgets for House lawmakers by 21 percent, the largest increase since 1996, to give traditionally underpaid congressional staff a pay raise. And after the Jan. 6 mostly peaceful protest, the bill would provide $602.5 million for the U.S. Capitol Police, an increase of $87 million, to help hire more officers.

Defund the police?

Not technically a pay hike for Congress, but, in particular House members, who are notorious for putting family members on the payroll and using staffers to run their errands and handle assorted personal projects for them.

In August, Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced staffers’ salaries could exceed those of lawmakers. Members in both the House and Senate, with the exception of leadership, make an annual salary of $174,000. Staffers can make up to $199,300. The MRA increase would allow those at the lower end of the pay scale, such as staff assistants, to be paid more. Members would not receive a pay increase under the bill, a point of contention for years.
