Question

What caused me to think of starting this group besides someone trying to belittle, and degraded me online. We are not all the same and were not meant to be, and should not be forced or made fun of by anyone for not being so. I have 4 children 2 are handicapped one has Down Syndrome and the other was in a horrible car accident at 18 months old and is in a wheelchair. All my children went to public schools, and had their share of bullying, the difference in them and many is they were taught to stand up for themselves never start a fight end it. My husbands proudest day was when he had to leave work because our daughter with Down syndrome punched a boy who bit her, and only stopped when he cried, this may sound extreme to some but you must understand children with down to understand this better. Online verbal abuse is a growing problem and contues for many children after the school year ends, and also pushes some children as young as 7 to suicide, this is not ok. If you think this is all learned at home you are mistaken I will get to that as well. There is more to online bullying then meets the eye, it can be many things pranks gone wrong, intended harm, joking between friends taken the wrong way, even preditors preying on children. We can even verbally abuse ourselves. To have a Great society we must learn the steps needed to improve ourselves and our thinking, dealing with others as well as removing ourselves from danger when needed

Thank you for you comment and understanding, we taught her she was uniquely different and special as we are are for a reason and we all have a purpose and reason in life, we just have to find it for ourselves. Thank you your comment add so much to this discussion.

The psychological impact bullying makes doesn't get the credit it deserves. When bullying is bad it breaks a part of you that understands how to communicate with the world. When that follows you home and feeds into your fears every day it can have a massive impact but we tell kids "sticks and stones may break your bones, but words can never hurt you"

They most certainly can, especially when we avoid the topic and pretend like there is less of an impact. Kids can learn to cope, and there is a balance to be found but bullies must be held accountable.

It's also potentially setting a standard in a child's head of what boundaries they are alowed to set even into adulthood.

Bravo to your daughter, I don't find that harsh at all. I find it harsh that in today's age of supposed acceptance that someone with downs syndrome would even get bullied. Though it brings the thought to mind... what must be wrong with a kid who thinks biting a girl with a "disability" is ok. (sorry if you don't consider it such, I use the term lightly)
