Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.Government has only one purpose, and it isn’t ”happiness!” It is firstly sovereign security in a very dangerous World. And secondly to protect the rights of its citizens from each other. Without rules, a certain subset of society will destroy society for their own short term gain. That subset includes power-hungry politicians, who are, by definition, opposed to any rules which might limit their power.
Even tyrannical governments like China must find a way to preserve the rights of its citizens, or find itself subject to the same kind of revolt that bought them into power. And that kind of revolt is happening in the West today. The most effective way of assuring your rights ever crafted is under assault by those hoping a Chinese-type of governance will make everyone happy.
It won’t. And a lot of people are going to be deprived of their rights - as they already are, and we will suffer, starve, be imprisoned and killed in the name of happiness.

It’s the similar reason the institution of marriage has become so weakened. Anything that is based on “happiness” is destined to fail. Jefferson wrote the line about the pursuit of happiness but the Founders did all they could to secure our Republic against mob rule. They feared anarchy-mob rule as much as oligarchy, tyranny and monarchy.
@CarriePCox. Absolutely correct CPC. You are well-read Constitutionally speaking. It is also true that anyone expecting marriage to fix their lives is in the same pickle as those hoping government can either. We fix our own lives as best we can first, THEN hope we don't mess it up with our partner. (if we're smart enough to get that.)
