THE AUTHORITIANS HAVE REACHED A NEW LOW

This got lost in the media yesterday but LA is threatening to shut off essential services for homes that dare to defy the governments unconstitutional orders. How is this legal? How is this humane? They would much rather force people to become homeless and join the other tens of thousands of homeless people on their LA streets.

Might I add, this is in reaction to a Mansion party and it was mostly black people that were there. I can't help to think that if this was a mansion party with any other group, the Democrats wouldn't say a word. How dare black people attempt to defy government bullshit orders and try to have a good time after months of bullshit orders. Unfortunately, there was a shooting there that gave it more attention and I am critical of the relation between the black community and gun violence but that's a different topic.

Whether it is race related or not, punishing a city due to a singular incident. The government cutting off the water and power is inhumane in the 21st century. Social distancing is not a law and they need to stop acting like it is. Where are the lawyers at when you need them to sue these assholes?

NYC is trash and so is LA. Hell, California is complete garbage and I don't see why anyone would want to stay there.

This is totalitarian and what you will get if the demonrats win in November!

I agree completely. This behavior will become normalized and we'll have political persecution on a frequent basis.

I saw this... It's disgusting! This is a blatant human rights violation! Trump should immediately issue an executive order cutting off all funding he has the authority to cut until this is reversed.

Being the human rights violation that this is, I wonder if Trump would have the constitutional authority to send in the Feds (even the military if necessary) to take control of these utilities to ensure those basic services continue to be provided to the people of Los Angeles... Any lawyers here able to clarify?

I'm always weary about the power of the federal government because it creates precedence. Today it's Trump but lets say in the future there is a Democrat President and they deem something that a Republican mayor does as unlawful or unconstitutional, then they might use the same powers.

@BlackoutNJ Yes, creating precedence is definitely a grave concern. That also goes for the precedence Eric Garcetti is setting too, for future Los Angeles mayors to be able to violate basic human rights with impunity.

I guess the thing that can stop this kind of precedence being set would be a court ruling against the executive action. The court would have the ability to quickly order an emergency stop on the executive action until the lawsuit was finalized. That would probably be the correct way to deal with this. My concern is that the plaintiff would require legal standing, which they could not have until their utilities have already been turned off, so someone would probably be without essential services for at least a few days before the situation could be remedied!

@DaveO276 I think you are right on the money. I believe they are able to prevent it before anyone is actually affected. The courts should be the non-political way (so called non-political) of stopping it from occurring but it requires some lawyers to stick their neck out.

@BlackoutNJ I hope you're right about being able to prevent it before anyone is affected. I'm no lawyer and I'm not American, so hopefully I'm missing something!

@DaveO276 I believe so, I can't think of any legal examples right now.

I agree Adam. Who in their right mind would move to a communist state. My state has a Governor who has a napoleon complex and is issuing unlawful orders to Michigan residence's. Again, nice piece.

I can't wait for the backlash and these people get voted out of office. The moderates are waking up to their nonsense.
