With the many challenges our country is currently facing and the divisiveness we are all seeing, what do you feel is our greatest hopes for overcoming these things?
We need something in common to bind us back together. We have some so much but have lost ourselves along this journey of abundance. The need for God, the value of family time, the ability to slow down and the value of life. Some crisis will draw us back to all of this, but what they maybe is uncertain.
For a start, maybe somehow overcome the two-party monopoly and elect a third party candidate to President, a political party that has a balance of the two sides.
During the depression folks without jobs moved. They sought employment. That doesn't happen today. Most locations that have employee shortage have housing shortages. A program to encourage people to abandon failing neighborhoods to fill the job available. Illegals are flocking because they have underground support.
Common external threat - so ecological problems, or a major economic depression. But there’ll be tribalistic impulses everywhere and intergroup violence too. Civilizational decline is possible, as is the creation of new stable pattens of interaction.
It’s like the old saw that “the Chinese character for opportunity and crisis is the same”. The existential threats we face may inspire us to overcome them. It is rational to doubt that we will overcome them, while nevertheless working to win.
