7 Moral Rules That Unite Humanity

According to this article, the 7 moral rules shared most widely across 60 cultures around the world (as reported in 600 studies) are:

  1. Help your family
  2. Help your group
  3. Return favors
  4. Be brave
  5. Defer to superiors
  6. Divide resources fairly
  7. Respect others’ property

What do you think about the list?

When I look at it, I think, "No wonder we're always arguing!" So many of these items have potential to conflict with others items on the list - or to cause conflict right inside each item...

Of course the place to begin is “who” decides what definition of “morals” is.
I see #’s 1,2,3 and maybe 7 being “useful” #’s 4,5 & 6 are some sort of “Liberal Globalist” tripe especially 5 & 6.
How did 5 & 6 become part of the definition of this version of “moral”?
#5; Defer to Superiors ... does this include “Superiors” like Pol Pot, Stalin, Numbnuts in Venezuela ... ? The list is truly endless. Deferring to these “Superiors” is more like insanity and fails to seem “moral”
#6; Divide Resources Fairly ... who decides what a “resource” is? Who decides what is “fair”?

Yeah... these just refer to the moral values that societies do emphasize. Not just big modern societies, but small tribal ones too, and sizes in-between. That doesn’t mean these are the values people should value. One way to think about this is trying to apply it to kids (siblings) when they are fighting over something, and you’re the parent.

Child: Donny keeps taking away my toys.

Parent: Be brave! Stand up to him, and tell him if he keeps doing that, you’ll stop playing with him.

Child: That’s stupid! I’m just gonna set him on fire.

Parent: No you won’t! After dinner, I am going to walk you over to his house and you are going to settle this like civilized humans.

Child: Screw you! I’m gonna do what I want. You don’t scare me!

Parent: LISTEN TO ME I’M YOUR FATHER!!!

  1. Be Brave
  2. Defer to Superiors
