I'm thinking of replacing the "Are you a "Social Justice Warrior?" question with something less combative and more specific to this website. Here are a few ideas... please vote or suggest another. The goal is to set the tone of the website for the new member and not scare people away.

How about "Are you able to cope with ideas or beliefs who differ from yours, without losing your mind or resorting to name calling"?

2

I think that question is fine. I couldn't answer no quick enough. Yes there is a negativity associated with the term SJW and it has been earned.

THANKS so much for the great feedback. I wrote a few paragraphs on the topic and will share with you my thoughts and updates for your review. In the meantime, I will remove the question today. I believe we have an opportunity for something really good to replace it.

I thought this was a really odd question when I signed up and it almost put me off joining IDW.

It felt like a trick question to catch out those not up to speed with the latest online buzzwords. A bit like asking a 95 year old whether someone was black or coloured and waiting eagerly for them to give the wrong answer - which is ironically exactly the sort of wordplay trick that many on IDW despise.

Yep agreed.

Yea, i'd shorten it up to 'are you a dumb ass'.

1

Are you an SJW is fine.

Do you hate white people? That's a good 9ne and goes along with their narrative....

Hmm Mmmm. . . . . . this takes some thinking . . . . How about . . . . Are the people you encounter in your day really important to you ?

My thinking was that is important to me to interact with people as equals . I have found over the years that my style of writing can be intimidating . That was never my goal . I really consider it failure if someone doesn't understand what I am saying .. I always have the feeling that , if I had written better the first time , I wouldn't have so much explaining to do .

@Georgesblogforum This is an argument for not treating people like equals as well. For example, two job candidates might have different qualifications and one being more qualified.

@Admin the proof is in the outcome . If the more qualified candidate is passed over in favor of the lesser qualified ,based on factors not relevant to the job , that just isn't right .

Is Hate Speech real?

That question kind of threw me. I'm 100% for equal treatment under the law but not for special privileges to make up for past wrongs. I would do away with it as I've met several self-proclaimed SJW who are quite capable of making reasonable good-faith arguments and that question really has nothing to do with one's ability to engage in civil discourse. Maybe replace it with something like "Do you support equal treatment for everyone?"

Q: Are you amenable to reason?

Wow, thanks everyone for the comments... you came up with so much better than on ones I was going to put up instead. I'll draft the questions now for your final feedback. Thanks!

Perhaps asking do you know the difference between (Fairness) & (Equality)?

0

We know immediately what you mean when you say "SJW". As a recovering SJW, I vote to keep it.

Gosh I’m glad you’re opening this up, I really didn’t like that question ya all. To be honest I don’t like the whole question period to get started. Hope you guys figure it out.

Thanks!

Yes, it should be replaced. Sorry to say, it really is a dumb question and it offends those individuals who have little use for SJWs. I never bothered to click on that category since I have so little interest in interacting with those who may consider themselves as such. No offense meant, by the way. Perhaps a general post or group on how to talk with (not at) with those who one recognizes as social justice advocates without turning it into a screaming match would be of greater value. I would find value in such discussion.

Maybe just ask if you are Leftist Communist Open Borders Globalist but pretty much means same thing

Good idea.

Is the goal to limit discourse between SJWs and others? Why? Isn't this the site of free speech? Personally, I have no problem with having all views expressed even if they're foolish. I hope that censorship is not the norm here and that people won't petition for ejection of members because of their unpopular views.

Yes makes sense!

No options - are you polling for the community to come up with something also?

Not for much use other than to show the % respondents publicly. I am thinking of a survey but we'll have to be more careful to let members know how it is being used. I mean exactly how (e.g., show the #s and everything)

Perhaps something like this:

"What is the best way to advance social justice? Select all that apply:"

A. The government should pass regulations ensuring that people are treated justly.
B. Institutions, such as schools and businesses, should set up rules ensuring that people are treated justly. People should avoid doing business with biased institutions.
C. Culturally, people should be encouraging to treat each other with respect, but social justice can't be enforced by governments or institutions.
D. Social justice is not a goal which anyone should pursue.

I really love this idea as it's true! We are really trying to get people to think that there are different, and most often valid, perspectives and we all want the same result - an acceptable level of fairness. How to reach a more close consensus of what the just amount of fairness is what we're all about no matter of our previous Left/Right leanings (In all dimensions of issues... note: not all issues are aligned L/R. There's different R^2 correlations so we need to acknowledge nuanced people.

@Admin My suggested question was written quickly.

Answer C should be split into two answers. People may want to select A, B, and the cultural part of C.

Another issue to consider, is that people are signing up from all around the world. I have a US-centered world view, so my questions and responses are in that viewpoint. I could imagine someone who thinks "Social Justice" interventions are needed in some countries but not others.
Perhaps:

E. "Social Justice" interventions by governments are only desirable in very rare/extreme cases.

Even the question would have to be written more carefully because, the people who think "social justice" is desirable sometimes have different and even mutually exclusive views as to what it is. For answer A and B, I assumed a certain definition when I wrote the question, but, given that I'm not a "social justice warrior" I don't want to presume a certain perspective.

Other possible questions:

Is social justice incompatible with freedom of association? (If a religious group wants to exclude women from leadership roles, can they do so? If a school wants teachers who model moral action according to a certain religious perspective, can they have a morality clause in their employment contract? etc.)

Is equality of outcome desirable? Should equality of outcome be enforced by government?

Is equality of opportunity desirable? Should equality of opportunity be enforced by government?

Does "Social Justice" imply group rights? If so, do those group rights imply group responsibilities?

I'd like to hear what other people think of possible questions/answers. Again, these are written quickly to convey an idea.

I believe some well worded questions about “hate speech “could be very telling.

There is nothing to vote on? You forgot to include the tabs maybe?

At the last minute, I removed my options as the free form discussion is much better!

0

I would suggest just a random array of political questions relating to left and right, and then perhaps one about whether or not you believe anyone should be silenced or deplatformed

0

Great idea, I didn't much understand that question. Social justice warrior sounded sorta cool, as a concept at the time I read it. But have since realized, it's not a label I want, LOL! Maybe something like...Do you believe in social equality?
