Another Trump Lie and Betrayal of the Public Interest

Donald Trump promised to reign in high drug prices. That was a lie. He is doing the opposite. Trump's only concern with drug prices is to protect them from any possible price decreases. Trump is so focused on keeping drug prices high and potentially unlimited in cost, that he is acting to remove a provision that has never once been used that would allow the government to limit drug price hikes for some drugs.

To be clear: Trump is going to eliminate a drug price control law that has never once been used in the 40 years the law has been on the books.

  • As drug prices have soared, lawmakers and patient advocates have pushed the federal government to deploy for the first time a powerful deterrent: a legal provision that allows it to suspend a drugmaker’s patent and license someone else to produce the drug.

  • Now, responding to industry alarm over those demands, the Trump administration is proposing to strictly limit the little-known power.

  • The move by the Department of Commerce is supported by drug manufacturers and research universities but could undermine Trump’s populist message of attacking drug prices. He declared in his first news conference after his inauguration that drug companies are “getting away with murder” and has called lowering prices one of his “greatest priorities.’’

  • The Commerce draft plan would prohibit the government from suspending a drugmaker’s exclusive patent over excessive pricing. It targets an obscure, never-used provision of a 40-year-old law called Bayh-Dole that is supposed to protect taxpayer interests in government-funded inventions, such as drugs discovered using federal grant money.

Questions: Is Trump's rhetoric about high drug prices being too high truth or lies? If its truth, then why is he moving against a never-used law that could limit at least some drug price hikes?

There are 2 problems as I see it.
First, the Federal government is legally restricted from negotiating the price of drugs for Medicare part D. Obama promised to correct this and failed in his 8 years. Trump still has 6. In any case, this is a legislative issue which won't go anywhere under the current climate.

Second, giving the Federal government negotiating power over a private captured market seems like a really bad idea prone to considerable abuse.

My suggestion to level the field is to require the Pharmaceuticals to sell the drugs at the average price they sell to everyone else. Medicare is a heavy and should easily be able to demand an average price. This will put appropriate upward pricing pressure on other buyers and minimize the loss of revenue for the pharmaceuticals so they can continue R and D for future drugs.

The truth about drug prices maybe? Stop paying off the Senate and Congress as well as other's emails from Wikileaks reveals alot about this i can point the the price of the Aid's drugs keeping in low outside of America and high here being upset over Clintons speech on the issue at the aids day event. He got out of control so to say. They want to rein him in and take a new direction.

A drug price control law is about as effective as rent control, never soles the problem. Why not attack the real reason for high drug prices? It is an artificial non competitive market that gives monopolistic pricing to US drug makers while banning the import of drugs from foreign manufacturers. Why keep a never used law on the books? Why not rail against the USDA and Congress for this mess?

@Daryl wasn't the guy helping Trump to lower drug prices found dead suicide i think blunt force trauma to the head 3 or 4 times self inflicted?

@Daryl Let me see if I understand your arguments. This law which is discrenary has been on the books for 40 years. That means that five presidents at least have had the option to implement that said law. So why blame Trump? Second, the right of the government to suspend a patent right and give manufacturing rights to other drug companies is a danger to constitutional government. To act is so arbitrary a manner pushes aside the rule of law for the rule of convenience. This is not a very moral position to support. Third, it does nothing to correct the problems of monopolistic industries.

@Daryl If President Trump were to use the law you site in an attempt to lower drug prices then I would believe that woud set off the lawsuits that will eventually reach the US Supreme Court and that particular law would be ruled unconstitutional. So why attempt to use it if that is the end result? Ih President Trump and his legal advisors believe that the use of such a law is unconstiitutional and yet he, and by extension want lower drug prices, then why does that make him a liar if he does not use such a law?

Our patent laws grant limited time monopolies but such patent rights can easily be extened to the point where one now has a perpetual monopoly. Reform patent laws so that drug makers cannot easiy keep their individual monopolies alive indefinitely. And change FDA regulations (yes, Congress has the power to rewrite such regulations) to allow competition from foreign drug companies. Your bile should be aimed at Congress, not the President.

@Daryl everything is relevant if you want the reason and to present and defend yourself in a comment or debate this is what I keep trying to tell you

@Daryl how can you not understand a person said to commit suicide this way is not relevant to any info. Of the topic at hand? If you would just do as I have asked and research not just believe what you choose too you can and will open up your world to the adventure of what politics really is

@Daryl trump is the 16th cousins of Hillary every president in history has been related confidence? Hillary said some time ago Trump would make a great President " because he can not be bought" he was a "Democrat " at that time. The plan for Trump to run as president was planned long ago. As a Democrat but he and others had a secret plan. If you research like I ask you to do you would see this and not be so upset over the trivial drivel they feed us daily. Yes, it matters the man was suicide anything that stops a sitting President from doing his job is a crime. The drug prices are wrong and will be addressed there are more pressing issues if you research as I ask you to do you would see the CIA and more are child traffickers now as a sitting President it is his job to prioritize what is most important to protect and save the citizen of the Nation and keep the nation safe on down the list. Keeping America upset over the trivial is a distraction of the real intention and evil that is going on.
