A FB friend has been reminding me that journalists have been monopolizing creative writing for the last three years. Why should they have all the fun?

John Di Leo informed me that Thotmose III ascended the throne on this day in 1479 BCE. That's 3,479 years ago. Since King Thot's copyright protection has probably lapsed, I guess I can write about it, too.

Pharaoh Thotmose III did not live in a creative age, as witnesses by the utter lack of creativity in naming him. It is a known fact there were no creative writing classes in ancient Egypt. We can sympathize. It's hard to be creative when your thesaurus weighs twenty-six tons.

The name "Thotmose" is a source of some academic controversy. Single Egyptologists think it means, "Thoth is born " The religious meaning is obvious to them.

Married Egyptologists disagree. They think it is colloquial ancient Egyptian for, "the kid is born." Their reason is also obvious.

It is is based on an ancient tradition carried out to this day in the birthing room. The new mother lovingly reaches out to the anxious father. She grabs his throat in a death grip and says, "The kid is born! NOW DON'T TOUCH ME FOR SIX MONTHS!" This must have been a family tradition because two other members of the 18th dynasty carried the same name. And all married Egyptologists agree this must be the correct etymology. As a father of three I can say it worked that way for me, too.

At any rate, this tended to make for cranky Pharaohs. And it also explains why they often suddenly left on military expeditions lasting six months or so.

Thank you for reading this expert opinion on ancient Egypt. Stay tuned for my upcoming article on why Queen Hatsepshut named herself after her millinerist.

And remember, for the latest in up-to-the-minute ancient news, think Allergicus!

The "author" presents another interpretation of the name Thotmose that is not widely credited. (Actually so far no one has credited it... but that's not uncommon with research grants. It is the stipend... er I mean the research itself that is important.)

As we know from Charlon Heston and a cursory search of the oracle god Google the name Moses is from the word Mo which is water and the word "uses" which is to draw out. So Moses means something vaguely reminiscent of "drawn out of the water". Hence we have the 10 Commandments movie which was quite drawn out.

Now from current urban hip-hoplite slang we have the word Thot. Although the word thot is in a language other than Hebrew or Egyptian and from a time period thousands of years later By The Power of My Stipend I can transpose / put today's word into the mouths of ancient Egyptians. Note that the ancient Egyptians have not disputed my translation. (I felt pretty safe about this linguistic technique seeing as how they let The Bangles get away with it.)

So... lost my train of Thot. Thot in common parlance stands for That Ho Over There. (Told you the meaning was both timeless and universal.)

So... if we combine the words for Moses and Thot (and you know you wanna) juxtaposing the ho and the drawn out thingy we get Drawn Out of that Ho (over there.) The closest / most vague interpretation of this is that the name means Whoreson. And since Thotmose was not the original but something after that we can safely suppose that in fact his name means Whoreson Junior.

(Btw the way, that is a fine name for a band and there is in fact a band with that name. Also Juxtapose The Ho is a decent name for a band.)

In those days, in that time, in any time there were differing interpretations upon the land. But still men being who they are and yea even who they were, some things span time itself.
Infantile humor is in fact timeless. (Especially mine 🙂 )

There is some difference of opinion on the meaning of the name Thotmose... but most Egyptologists are in complete agreement that all of the children and not a few of the adults referred to the soon to be Pharaoh as Snot-Nose.

When the erstwhile Nile Makers of Journals snidely scribed hieroglyphics to this general effect... Thotmose made decree that so let it be unwritten, so let it be undone... He said he would show them the true power of the Press... and sentenced them to death by pressing. Then he did chucketh all that remained of their remains into the pyramids.

And then he did puzzleth and pondereth why no one named a condom after him.

Indeed. Why should they have all the fun?
Reading your post was a lot of fun. Thanks.

Howdy, and thanks for reading

Being all erudite and what not... I have another "interpretation" of the meaning of Thotmose if you're interested.
Btw... reading and replying to your creative writing piece is a lot more fun than the political stuff.
