Why are you here? Is it to ask or to tell? Are you spreading your version of the good news, or are you seeking find ideas and learn?

Or what?

It's not as if the town square is an unimportant part of representative government. What makes forums an important argumentation to Twitter and other elements of the electronic public square is that people tend to me more thoughtful and not just react emotionally to someone else's comment. It's the difference between call in to radio and letters to the editor.

These forums serve the same purpose as Barber Shops and Beauty Salons did during my childhood. Before that it was pubs and coffee houses. It's a place to chat and exchange ideas. To get confirmation ibn the emotional sense.

There was a time when I thought forums would be a place where experts could answer questions from the general population and present new ideas. To some extent that may happen but I have learned that old fashion research papers are still the best way to get information. I'm either case the problem is we are drowning in information and fact checking is nearly impossible. You also have to realize the peer review process is in turmoil. If you want to really learn a lot of hard work and skepticism is required.

On a more personal level I think forums have just become a habit for me. Over the last 25 years I have always participated in various forums. If I had people in my life who were interested in the same things I find interesting I would probably just chat with them by email.

So this is Floyd's barber shop or Cheers without the actual human contact. The Wednesday Fellowship of the information-age Church. Damn.

@govols

I have participated in forums where highly regarded intellectuals frequented. (By intellectuals I'm meaning academics and scientists). They quickly become bored with the discussions because most intellectuals are involved in such esoteric work that few people have the background for deep discussions on specific topics. Even when the other members are highly intelligent often the more general and "philosophical" discussions become repetitive.

Most of the leaders of the IDW community suffer from a similar problem. Once you have heard their lectures and read their books they to become repetitive. There is only so much knowledge a person can share.

The question is how do you keep people's interest at a level where they are generating high level content.
