China continues to actively undermine western alliances by targeting key members of the Five Eyes community, says Sky News host Paul Murray.

The Chinese Communist Party has found a way to tear into the strong Five Eyes alliance, with both New Zealand and Canada breaking ranks. Mr Murray said China stands as the current and “greatest threat to the world order” and is continuously attempting to reshape the world in its own image.

In recent times China’s relationship with the Five Eyes nations of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA, has been varied.

“China loves trying to poke holes in those Five Eyes”. Canada cancelled a planned military exercise in Canada where Chinese troops were purportedly going to undergo winter training.

“Once this was revealed it was then cancelled and the propaganda arm of Chinese government, The Global Times, spoke quite nastily about what Canada had done,” Mr Murray said.

The relationship between China and New Zealand – also part of the ANZUS agreement with Australia and the US – has too blossomed in recent times, to the point where NZ Trade Minister Damien O’Connor criticised Australia’s approach to ties with Beijing.
“Clearly if they (Australia) were to follow us and show respect (and) I guess a little more diplomacy from time to time, and be cautious with wording, then they too hopefully could be in a similar situation,” Mr O’Connor said.

New Zealand was also the only Five Eyes nation who did not sign a joint statement condemning China’s imprisonment of 50 pro-Democracy Hong Kong protesters in January.

“Maybe China has found a way to break the Five Eyes, to get inside the ANZUS deal,” Mr Murray said.

“This stuff matters. How can you cuddle up to a country that if you believe in the wrong type of god, or god at all not the state, that’s enough to be arrested, to be de-personed.”
