LINK It Wasn't Abortion That Formed the Religious Right. It Was Support for Segregation.

The religious right, who liked to call themselves the “moral majority” at the time, actually organized around fighting to protect Christian schools from being desegregated. It wasn’t Roe v. Wade that woke the sleeping dragon of the evangelical vote. It was Green v. Kennedy, a 1970 decision stripping tax-exempt status from “segregation academies”—private Christian schools that were set up in response to Brown v. Board of Education, where the practice of barring black students continued.

Here I thought I would offer you some information so that you could correct your post:

[nationalreview.com]

Am I supposed to listen to someone who writes books like How Liberals Got it Wrong in the Cold War and Still Blame America First, How Liberals Hurt Those They Claim to Help, and How Modern Feminism Lost Touch with Science, Love, and Common Sense. Seems like she has an axe to grind.

It's also disingenuous to compare today's Democratic party with the Democrats of the past. Everyone knows that today's Democrats were yesterday's Republicans. Democrats were the party of segregation and slavery... but they were right-wing Conservatives - Republicans were the left-wing liberals. Eventually the parties shifted, when Democrats started supporting more civil rights. Republicans are currently the ones supporting racist policies.

Regardless of all of that, the origins of the Evangelical base is correct, regardless of party affiliation.

@JacksonNought "Seems like she has an axe to grind." and you don't? " Everyone knows that today's Democrats were yesterday's Republicans" that statement is a long way from factual, Early Republicans might have been described as classic liberals, you most certainly cannot describe current Democrats as classic liberals since they seem to have in no small part adopted Socialist if not Marxist ideology, in fact many at the top of the party including H Clinton and Obama were clearly communist sympathizers in their early years. You need to find other sources for your information since Republicans have not demonstrated any racist policies and the only place you hear that is in the various Trump smears that get repeated without serious scrutiny by the media leftists. It can be argued very effectively that Democrat policies though outwardly claiming to be helpful to minorities and the poor were more effective in marginalize the very same and that in many ways its the Democrats who use tokinism to cover their tracks. There are is an increasing number of black intellectuals who support this position , I watched Uncle Tom recently and it touched on much of this, and there are many more great commentators with similar views. Like National Review piece (which you dismissed based on some type of pseudo intellectual snobbery) The Democrats have been trying to rewrite their own history for some time now and it appears you've taken the bait.

@dirtbill yeah, I may have my own axe to grind, but I am not the one who wrote the article.

And yes, my statement is 100% factual - early Republicans were the Liberals fighting for abolition, Democrats were the Conservatives fighting for segregation, and at a point they switched. The Democratic party is still made up of a majority of Classic Liberals - they are still pro-Capitalism, favor corporations and the wealthy, think they are better than most people... there is just enough social justice in them to be considered to the left of the Republicans. If they adopted your so-called "Marxist" ideology, then why did Biden win the primary and is now President-Elect, instead of the actual Socialist Bernie?

Perhaps you need to leave your echo chamber and actually look at the real world. Trump is most definitely racist, from his policies to his rhetoric - violating civil rights laws in the past by denying black people housing, his original rise in the Conservative circles from his "birtherism" claims, a "Muslim" ban, calling black countries "shitholes", the completely useless wall, his treatment of Puerto Rico, his continuation and worsening of child separation on the border, his continued bullying of the exonerated Central Park Five - the Republicans unwavering support and defense of anything that man does makes them complicit.

Americans are more likely to agree (61%) than disagree (37%) with the statement “When Americans speak up and protest unfair treatment by the government, it always makes our country better.” However, Americans are less likely to agree (52%) and more likely to disagree (47%) with the statement “When Black Americans speak up and protest unfair treatment by the government, it always makes our country better.”
Republicans are 25 percentage points more likely to agree that protests make the country better when the statement does not mention Black Americans (49%) than they are when the protesters are specified as Black Americans (24%). Among Republicans who most trust Fox News, this effect grows to 37 percentage points: 47% favor the statement without Black Americans, compared to only 10% who favor the statement when the protesters are identified as Black Americans.

You also had the outright racism and opposition to civil rights as exhibited by presidents such as Nixon and Reagan. Don't even get me started on Strom Thurmond's impact on the party.

You think Democrats use tokenism? The Republicans basically seek out black people to agree with them, and throw them at the media to say "see, black people agree with us!" Look at the idolization of people like Ben Carson, or Candace "Hitler Was Right" Owens.

@JacksonNought you completely ruin your credibility and any credit for intelligence with the Owen's quote since its proper context just the same as Trump's white supremacy bull shit, if you can't be even slightly honest you don't deserve anyone's time for discussion. If it makes you feel any better you have plenty of company in the leftist liars club.
