Why is everyone so shocked about FB, Twitter, Apple, Amazon, etc. We let them become powerful monopolies, and now you're SHOCKED that their abusing that power? Have none of you EVER read a dystopian novel?

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.It shows that the distinction between state power and market power in libertarian theory is bullshit. How many times have you heard from libertarians that private businesses can't coerce you, while governments can? (Though for some reason libertarians hate the privately owned part of the Federal Reserve System, while in general they want to privatize as many of the government's functions as possible. I don't understand the difference.)

The real important distinction is large, centralized organizations can exercise vastly more power than a typical individual can, and can apply that power to coerce. When the Bill of Rights was authored, the big problem of the day was Government. I suspect at the time, in the colonies, there were no other organizations large enough or pervasive enough to be worth limiting. Now there are. The rights secured in the amendments need to be applied beyond government in some reasonable way.
Imagine if a private restaurant business were to put up a sign out front saying they would not serve people of a certain ideology; say, a religion. We would not stand for that, and we have laws to prevent it. Now imagine if your phone company listened in on your calls and decided to terminate your service because they did not approve of the topics or language you used to discuss them.
@SuperAtheist In a free market, it wouldn't be a problem. The problem is corporations using their power to restrict market access. It's one thing for a company to refuse service to someone; it's quite another for them to coerce other companies and related enterprises from doing business with that someone.

Big Tech is no more a free marketplace than Big Pharma. Monopolies are created/sustained by teaming up with Big Government in back rooms.
I covered this in another comment, THEY are private businesses, They are only effected by MONEY!!!
If you stop paying them: 1. they will go out of business 2. They will change to keep your business!!!
They don't care about YOU, they care about your money!!!
SO, you have a choice to make!!!!!
I don't subscribe to any of THEM, I use them occasionally, if they went away, I would not miss THEM!!!
Anyhow, someone else would come in to fill the gap!!!

While technically true, in practice they won't notice it.They're huge, still growing, and already very profitable. They can lose some of us. Imagine giving up your car in the 1970's to spite OPEC -- it hurts you a lot more than them. Even if you got ten mliiion people to drop off FB, it would be a speed bump to them. And they'd be glad you were gone, and make up the right words to allay any fears their investors had, like "We'll replace them with even more millions of new accounts from emerging markets in Asia and Africa". This in fact touches on the problem -- they see themselves as world citizens working on world ethical standards, and most of the world is shit.
