Crazy monkeys are all about networking. Because they are social animals social structures define reality. As long as the environment is easy and unstable it represents a fitness advantage. Unfortunately civilization requires a harsh but stable environment.

Empathy is not what you think it is. It's primarily the product of mirror neurons. Other instincts are responsible for social order. The need to not be ostracized being the one we are concerned with here. It's why social media is so powerful. It's about friends and likes. Since in the natural state their is only consumption and no production it's easy to see how given the chance to rely on networking people lose their conscientiousness. Conversation becomes an end itself. Reputation building and destruction is the way the monkey's social order is built. It involves lots of grooming, posturing and lying.

Society is always trying to return to the natural state, luxury makes that possible for a while. Civilization is built by strong people but it produces weak people who let it collapse by following their instincts for an easy but unstable environment.

There is much confusion over the nature of reality. Because of science we have some understanding of physical reality. Science itself however relies on cultural evolution but culture is entirely abstract. It produces physical accoutrements but all productivity takes place first as abstract manipulation. That manipulation is as real as the things it produces. The problem is it is not restrained by replication fidelity as seen in physical reality. That allows for rapid cultural evolution but at the cost of instability.

The great reset is monkey business disguised as economic sophistication. It is defined by social engineering without actual engineering. It appears to be conscientious to the casual observer because it aligns with instinct. The need for social order based on networking and reputation. Ironically it's those instincts that doom it. Networking and reputation are unstable and produce chaos. Social grooming is no substitute for productivity.

Monkeys are oddly egalitarian. They have a strong instinct for fairness. We see their social structures as hierarchical because civilization has primed us to see the world that way. The problem is that instincts don't work that way. The queen ant is as much a slave to the workers as the workers are to the queen. Monkeys however are not completely slaves to their instincts. The life of complex social animals involves abstractions. The ability to function as individuals proportionally to sophistication. It's this ability to introduce "errors" in behavior that defines cultural evolution. Behavioral flexibility requires that fairness be applicable situationally. What is fair becomes what controls my ability to build networks which in turn creates a hierarchy not based on productivity but conspicuous consumption either abstractly and emotionally or physically.

What is rational and what is irrational is a matter of perspective. Since we are not evolved to concern ourselves with productivity from the instinctual perspective productivity is irrational. All hierarchies can become a matter of grooming or social manipulation not productive competency. That is basically where we are at. Those people who still cling to socially evolved norms will still expect that hierarchy be based on merit. Unfortunately even then merit can be distorted by instincts such as in the divine rights of kings. Religion for example bridges the abstract and physical realities but religious structures are not productive meritocracies. Even religious hierarchies are based on networking and grooming not strict adherence to abstract values that conform to the harsh but stable requirements of civilization. The world as Shakespeare noted is a stage and our place in it largely dependent on drama.
