The road pavers charge 200,000 per mile of road.

How much would it be if taxpayer's werent paying for it?

The average concrete driveway 30' x 24' costs around $7000 if 4" thick. Double that for the minimum 8" light duty street. Then you have to add curbs and gutters and storm sewers, figure $45 a lin ft. Streets are typically a minimum of 30' wide. If the average lot size is 120' your share of the cost of the street in front of your house is 120x15+(7000x2)/(30x24)+45x120 roughly $34,000 plus misc like seeding and utility relocations, maybe $5000. So the street in front of a small home cost maybe $40,000. You can add maybe another $10,000 for utilities if you are lucky. If you are wonder why lots are so expensive in new developments there you go.

In places that are heavily regulated that cost goes up substantially.

The average property tax is $1300. At least 40% goes to schools, the rest is divided up among counties, cities, public transportation, higher education, etc. leaving roughly 4% for roads. That would be about $52 dollars for the average tax payer. That means that if the street in our example needed replacement it would take the example tax payer 769 years of taxes to pay for it. If you are wonder why our infrastructure is in such bad shape there you go.

If I was looking for ways that the average tax payer is being ripped off I would look at schools not roads. I don't have anything against teacher or schools but they have become unaffordable. Some of that is due to excessive administration cost, part rediculous prices for books and other equipment, the desire for smaller class rooms, special services such as consoling, etc. End the end however it is going to very difficult to reign in the costs.

I think almost every complex society today has been living beyond their means for the past 50 years. Borrowing money that could never be paid back. The question becomes who was it borrowed from. Some people say future generations but that makes no sense. Future generations don't exist. If you suggest it was just printed that makes no sense either. You can't print the things it was spent on. It has to come from diverted labor. This is where it gets really complicated. How can you borrow labor and how can you pay it back? The reason it is so complicated is that you can't define labor. For example art is valuable but did labor produce it? Are people in the financial industries laborers who produce something? During the Covid pandemic they tried to define essential service, does that mean anyone not providing an essential service is non-essential? We know from history that rapid economic development will compensate for inflationary forcing. That is why tax collection in adjusted currency falls when taxes are increased because of reduced economic expansion. Why are we addicted to economic expansion beyond population growth? One of the answers has to be borrowed productivity but what does that mean? To pay for what we have ignored it's clear we need to work smarter and harder. I doubt there are going to be many volunteers.

I have more questions than answers 🙂

@Neo-Tech

You misread the statement. You can print money and buy things but the things themselves can't be printed.

@Neo-Tech

Certainly is true that it takes money to make "real" money.

@Neo-Tech

The point I was trying to make is that all most everyone today lives beyond their means. To some extent government spending is a reflection of that. For decades almost every tax increase for schools has passed because of "think of the children". Still the educational system keeps getting worse. How much of the excess government spending is a result of democracy?

@wolfhnd ITFP, it's not ("all most everyone" ). There are still plenty of responsible people in the country. I for one. And most of the excess government spending is a result, not of democracy, but of Democrats.

@GaryMysels

I appreciate your thoughts but what you are really saying is there are too many "democrats". I would agree with that sentiment but what are you going to do about it? Right now the balance of power is being decide by "independents" and undecided. My personal experience with those groups is that they lean liberal. Somewhat balanced by libertarians who lean conservative. What we really need is to get the libertarians to give up their "principles" ,which I would call ideology, and be practical. Libertarian candidates are killing the republicans in close races. The other group that is hurting the republicans is white, middle class, females. On issues like school bonds or anything else that has some similarity to "think of the children" they lean liberal. Properly played issues like CRT and gender could work in republicans favor but you can't attack any of the "victims". The necessary soft approach will at the same time turn off conservative males. It's a tough game.

Depends upon the lowest bid.

"If" Nova Scotia can be used as an example, the work ethics of the Department of Highways workers is horrible and the waste (time) atrocious. On any given day, at any road construction site, you can easily see far more loafers than workers.
Many simply sit in their trucks much of the time, while others stand around in little groups having a chat, and still others "supervising" which the greatest numbers often going to the supposed supervisors.
Capable people with a decent work ethic could easily complete our highway constructions in half the time and most likely at half the price.
The phrase "government work" didn't just appear out of nowhere...

Easy to find out, get an estimate to pave a quarter mile long drive, 30 feet wide, then multiply by FOUR!!!!!!! It will be different in different parts of the country!!!!!! Just saying!!!!!

Serg97 Level 8 Mar 13, 2023

I think the standards are quite different from a private driveway (thickness/compression) than a highway so the comparison may not be quite so simple.

@Dale I understand the basics of road construction, I am no expert!!! For standard two lane roads , we are not talking major engineering feats!!!!!!!
