If Islam was in anyway the religion of peace then there would have been relative peace after conquest. That didn't happen instead war simply shifted to internal conflict.
I would argue that for it's time and place Islam was the near perfect religion for a civilization intent on conquest. It is designed to keep women as warrior breeders and young men discontent and aggressive. It even has provisions to turn conquered women into new breeders and give young men access to them.
The question is why didn't Christianity turn out to be the religion of peace? As an eschatological religion mostly free from considerations of ethnicity and focused on brotherly love it should have been peaceful.
These observations have led me to believe that the culture that a religion is embedded in determines how the religion will be expressed in behavior. That tends to be true of all ideologies. In a way Marx was right that religion is an "opiate" but that seems to be true of all ideologies. They don't so much determine the course of a civilization as form an emotional glue for the members of that civilization. You can think of ideologies as a drug of choice. Philosophy may actually be a more important influence on the course of civilization than religion. Certainly natural philosophy has determined the course of Western civilization and religion has been unable to alter that course.
Natural philosophy is the double edge sword of Western civilization. It made Western civilization incredible powerful but it also weakened the glue that held it together. Because it is deterministic it has also weakened the necessary concept of individual responsibility that religion provides. The current wave of narcissism and nihilism was an unavoidable result.
