@RoscoNovaro autism is a spectrum and Greta shows no signs of being seriously mentally handicapped as you put it. if she had handlers her dissidents would cal her pathetic. also strange how a sixteen year old is a “little girl” when she lobbies for political change but a “young woman” when she is sexually assaulted.

It's a war, a religious war. On one side you have those who with unquestioning faith follow their prophets such as Ayn Rand, Adam Smith, Ronald Reagan, and Trump. On the other side you have the cults of Marx, Environmentalism, Diversity and Inclusion, Incompatibilitism, Enemies of group selection, Post modernists, Globalists, and Corporatists. In a polarized world many people will simply feel they have to pick a side. It doesn't hurt to have emotion on your side to tug those people to your side.
The historical equivalent of Greta Thunberg is Joan of Arc. They are both mentally ill young women. As it turns out sugar and spice and everything nice, not to mention some disturbing association with virginity and fertility makes young women effective figure heads. Those same primeval emotions will result in an equal but opposite reaction as in burn the witch.

There is something about powerful men that makes them want to control young women. The one power they can never have is the power of young woman to manipulate. How many times have you heard a young women say I have him wrapped around my little finger. It's something you often see in cult leaders who end up abusing the daughters of their members. We are more Chimpanzee like than we wish to admit.
