If you read the history of that statue and the circumstances surrounding its demise, the only real similarity between then and now is that people wanted change. Otherwise, it's pretty much an apples to oranges comparison.

The history of the statues does make a difference, doesn't it?
@WilyRickWiles I'm not sure I understand the context of your question, but if you're suggesting the history of certain statues means they deserve to be torn down by people who are swept away by anger, I would disagree with that. It's worth noting that people disagreed with the destruction of King George's statue, too.
@coalburned I just think that if people are going to take issue with the removal of statues because "they erase history," we should consider whether statues provide an accurate and full account of that history. And if they don't, then we owe it to those people to correct the record, as it were, through addition if possible, and subtraction if needed.
Or they could leave history to the history books and concede that they are fighting to protect what the statues represent. At least we could all be on the same page about their meaning, even if our moral judgments of that meaning were opposed.
@WilyRickWiles I think there are two fair questions to ask. First, does the removal of a statue "erase history"? Second, is it right for rioters and/or protesters to destroy statues?
If we're honest, nothing can erase history...it is what it is. But statues do represent something, and if that "something" needs to be re-examined, it should be done through thoughtful discussion/debate. If it's agreed that a statue should be removed, so be it, but do it in a way that is more civil than a bunch of people venting their anger. Take the Statue of Liberty for example. You know there are people who absolutely hate what it stands for. I'll assume you're not one of them. How would you feel if someone blew it up for no other reason than they were angry about what it represents?
