I’m Black and Afraid of ‘White Fragility’, a leftist critique [thebellows.org]

"Robin DiAngelo's corporate-friendly anti-racist screed actually reinforces racist beliefs."

I'd argue that some the fundamental ideas of "White Fragility" are useful and correct, but only one aspect of racism. To combat racism in organizations, structural issues involving ownership and management are much more important than racial sensitivity among the rank and file. After all, how meaningful are an individual employee's racial attitudes when black people are disproportionately excluded from ownership and management, and they are disproportionately laid off and diversity departments eliminated when the economy sours?

The worthy cause of anti-racism is harmed when organizations use such trainings to paper over their failure to address structural issues, and when white moderate professionals apply their lessons outside of the workplace as a means to exclude working class people from power rather than educate and address systemic racism and economic injustice.

This critique was largely reflected in the response from black abolitionist activists to reading lists compiled after George Floyd's murder by a police officer. Now was not the time for deeply reflective reading--internalizing structural issues--or paternalism, but action and solidarity rooted in shared interests.

Garbage book written by a fruitcake. "....black people are disproportionately excluded from ownership ...."? By who?

What structure would you like to change and how?

I've yet to hear a single policy or idea from the left. Just screaming at the sky and blaming race. Oh wait....defund cops so I guess that the best idea you've got. It's pathetic and it would be laughable if you commie fucks weren't so very dangerous.

The book and the subsequent HR sessions are a cash grab. Not everyone white person is racist. Denying you're a racist doesn't mean you're a racist. This is like Scientology where they make you take a test and the test always points to you needing help from their paid courses.

I live voluntarily in a black rural community. I chose it because we are all very community focused and church-oriented. White people don't seem to be tied to spirit anymore--but that's probably an unkind generalization and I realize that. Anyway the people here are average Joes who also think that this stuff is making things worse. Why do they think it? Because all of us are focused on what's important instead of what is wrong. We're focused on helping each other get the kids off to school, to getting rid of the coyote packs, of helping getting the hay baled, of taking care of the sick in our community.

It's why Jesus didn't go around pointing out who was sinning. Instead he said love each other, do good to each other, feed each other, care for each other. Because once you start doing good you don't have time to think about doing wrong.

Anti-racism is not a worthy cause in and of itself. No cause should be focused around a negative. Don't cheat. Don't steal. Don't blah blah blah. It's looking at the symptoms and not the real disease which is a lack of love.

Do you honestly believe that racists are good, awesome, generous and loving people who just happen to not like blacks? Fuck no. The people who virulently don't like blacks are also the people to abuse their families, to become police and authoritarians of some kinds.

The cure to this is not focusing on one aspect of their character but building a moral, loving society and that starts with making ALL children feel loved. You cannot repair the past by punishing the future. You grow a loving, respectful, non-violent society with warmth, mercy, and forgiveness.

In my opinion, though. If you feel you need those classes to stop being racist then go right ahead.

While there are certainly people worthy of the label racist, who demonstrate a pattern of racist comments or actions, I prefer to use it sparingly as a label. Rather, I prefer to use it to describe comments, actions, beliefs, and systems.

I'm personally interested in studying the things, particularly the history, that have influenced me and the place I live, and then making adjustments to how I relate to other people, not unlike how you have tried to make moral choices. We still live in a racist society and I can acknowledge when I have contributed to racial harm. It's not a death sentence. But my interest is no different than my general interest in learning about the world. And I am privileged to have enough education and free time to do that.

At the end of the day, I don't really care about people's racist beliefs. A racist person who never encounters black people isn't doing much harm, at least until demagogue politicians start exploiting them. Rather, I care about dismantling racist systems and creating economic justice for all. To me, anti-racism is necessary to the extent that we must acknowledge but not reinforce the racism in society in order to dismantle it.

And I think these classes are undermined by the knots they tie themselves in to avoid addressing structural issues. Perhaps the better ones prompt people to start learning about racism and contribute to a better work environment, but again, that's hampered by ownership and management.

@WilyRickWiles I made a post on reparations. I believe we should pay out 40 acres and a mule with interest. I would be interested in your take on it.
