They have already breached a federal facility in Portland. As far as I am concerned, that should be sufficient justification for Trump to shut down the Portland riots by any legal means necessary, whether that's the Insurrection Act or martial law... or whatever he has the authority to do that will get the job done. Show would-be terrorists across the country that they will not get away with attacking federal assets.

Where federal property has not been breached, Trump's best path to victory is to have the Feds stand by and just watch it all happen until Federal property is breached (or at least seriously threatened) or state authorities request help. Damage done within the jurisdiction of the states is entirely their responsibility, at least until they request federal assistance. Trump just needs to make sure he has the Feds on standby close enough to move in promptly when the time comes.

If Democrats lose their cities because of their own idiocy and their stubborn, egotistical refusal to ask the Republican president to help them clean up the mess they created, well that's on them.

The rioters in Portland breached the federal courthouse and attacked the feds who were inside. This is about so much more than just some buildings!

There are people there who are violent insurgents - not peaceful protesters. Law and order must be restored to protect lives.

A person who has committed a federal crime does not have a legal right to not be arrested and prosecuted for their crime.

I wasn't able to read the NY Times article (I'm not interested in signing up) and I see rhetoric, but no evidence in the other articles that anyone's rights have been violated.

I also hear that 18 people have now been charged with federal crimes over the events in Portland.

Probable cause? A federal facility was breached and federal officers were assaulted. 18 people have been charged with federal crimes, so presumably law enforcement had reason to believe they committed those crimes. What more probable cause is needed?

Presumably their cases will go through the judicial system where, as defendants, they will have opportunity to use any executive misconduct to benefit their defense, and will ultimately have the opportunity to sue the feds if there are grounds to do so. Remember, the federal judge ruled that the state has no standing to challenge the feds on this. The individuals do have standing.

Do people in executive positions do the wrong thing sometimes? Absolutely! For the sake of the people, they still need to have broad powers to act expeditiously. It is a complex system of checks and balances.

Yes, the wheels of justice do turn slowly, but one must go through the process and not try to cut corners, or the whole system will collapse and people will be left with chaos.
