Question

I like many others often ponder the current state of social unrest and division, and it occurs to me that my grandparents might well have known the solutions to all of today's problems as well as we know how to type comments on social media.

Things like “pride goeth before the fall” taught us to have humility.

Remember “sticks and stone will break my bones but words will never hurt me” which taught us to dismiss teasing and bullying.

I think it would be both fun and useful to compile a list of all these truism that were once commonly used and what they taught us growing up.

"Truth is stranger than fiction" Epistimological humility.

"You are no better than anyone else". My mothers version of pride goeth before a fall. My brother and sisters hated that one.

"Common sense will get you further in life than brains". My dads farmer wisdom. His childrens lives kind of put the lie to that one.

" Don't jump off a bridge just because the other kids are" Think for yourself.

"Be seen and not heard" Gain experience and maturity before you offer an opinion.

"Hard work never hurt anyone" closely associated with "idle hands are the Devil's work shop".

"Money can't buy you happiness" closely associated with "Be careful what you wish for".

"Don't take anything for granted" balanced by "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth"

I could do this all day. I take folk wisdom seriously

One of my favorite proverbs is, "Fall down seven times; stand up eight."

It's a Japanese proverb that essentially means, it's not important how many times you get knocked to the ground, so long as you stand back up afterwards.

This one has great meaning to me because - as a younger man - I was obsessed with not failing. I viewed failure as something near catastrophic instead of being one of life's great teachers. And so I had to teach myself that failure isn't a catastrophic event, but quitting BECAUSE of failure is.

The one I heard most was 'Suffer In silence'. My parents lives were changed forever when they were in their early 20s. They never once complained about the resulting hardship. The message to me was clear...complaining about my lot in life solves nothing and burdens others.
