Hollywood leftists just whacked the Soprano’s - so unless you’re ready to choke on the woke, take a pass on the newly released Soprano’s prequel, The Many Saints of Newark.
The problem with any production today, thanks to stringent diversity and equity regulations, is that shows must have representation of identity groups. Ideology over aesthetics became an absurd issue in the movie Dunkirk, when woke purists complained there were not enough black people in WWII.
Is it really a surprise that minorities were underrepresented in the Mafia? Call it Italian supremacy. To “fix” that injustice, the Soprano’s prequel is set against the backdrop of the 1967 Newark race riots, and, voila! The mob tale becomes a contemporary sermon on social justice. Or not so subtle social engineering, with dumb Italians and enlightened, noble blacks.
As one woke reviewer put it “contrast the conservative culture of the old Mafia soldiers, who still wear suits and listen to Frank Sinatra, with the changing culture around them, where acid rock and political radicalism has already taken root. The tensions boil over…”
The result is a disjointed mess, where a parade of black characters, unrelated to the classic HBO series, and largely unrelated to the new plot, and turn up to fill quotas for the equity department.
Tony must be turning over in his grave.
