Is that father legally blind? I'm not a gun owner (not by choice), but why would you need a scope that size for close proximity self defence?

It is just a lightweight rifle and can be used just like any other .223. He probably uses it more often for paper targets and wouldn't take the scope off in a self-defense situation.
@DMcCreery1956 sure but small calibre or not, the limited use of firearms I've had drilled the point of not squeezing the trigger till you had a target insight. A scope in a short distance and a dynamic environment would be a hindrance. The dude is either a complete wannabe, movie type sniper hero or just lacks basic knowledge - and is more likely to shoot innocent bystanders. Unless he thinks he is going to be making longer distance shots, which would rule out self defence.

could be that his rifle is an AR10 (heavier caliber than .223) and he uses it for longer range shooting; with the scope mounted it could be that there are iron sights beneath the scope or on an angled side rail. It could also be he really doesn't know how his weapon should be set up for the potential conflict environment he is walking into. These days there are a LOT of people who bought guns who have little or zero experience and knowledge as to how to use them - he could be one of those people...a clueless newbie to guns.
I don't worry about it much. In any violent scenario he is very exposed and would probably be shot very early on in the skirmish. Unless he has military or LEO esperience with armed conflict he likely would panic and run the instant bullets start flying - if he didn't get shot first he would certainly be diving for cover...and his daughter too.
@Tom81 I have one. It came with the scope mounted. I don't like scopes, so it came off. For up close, you point and shoot, like Kyle Rittenhouse did. I doubt that this guy was squeezing the trigger, since that would discharge a round. Perhaps it wasn't loaded and he was using it as a parade prop? Since he didn't shoot it, we don't know.
Gee.. why aren't there assbag scum Darwin candidates like Rosenbaum, Huber and Groskreuz attacking these legally armed Americans, who are not actively shooting anyone.... what could poosibly go wrong?..
