This is a dumb poll as it's not a black and white issue. Anybody below the age of 10 should be freely let in and not even be counted in emigration quotas (only their parents). They don't count! They bring a fresh young body, will soon be acculturated and educated, and contribute to a system where one day they will retire and get Medicare and Social security. All well and good.

But the older they are from there, the more net draw on the system they pose. Languages and skills have to be taught, intolerant attitudes of their own need to be removed (maybe they believe in Sharia law or something). As they arrive at increasingly advanced ages, certainly over 40, they have less and less to contribute, and more and more will they will drain from social services before they die. This isn't 1919, where all that didn't count (send us your homeless, tempest tossed, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free). It's 2019, and huddled masses need medicaid.

It's quite hard to migrate to Australian after the age of 50. The older you are, the less the Australians want you. Any society with a social safety net should naturally feel the same. In all these societies the people working from 25 to 65 pay for those younger, and those older. Countries like Denmark have about one wage-earner per one person not paying into the system. After you get more people not earning money than earning it, things go to hell quite rapidly.

Now, there must be cases of elderly people who want to go from one developed nation to another. Say from Denmark to Australia or the reverse. In such cases the governments need to do some math, and have the incoming person pay the difference as an emigration tax. It's probably not that much.

But somebody from the DR Congo emigrating to Denmark or the US at the age of 60, is a walking social disaster. It would not take very many such people to completely outstrip whatever the US gives the DR Congo in foreign aid.

If tariffs worked Hong Kong and Singapore would be the poorest places on earth. Trump is good on some things but he doesn’t understand macro economics. Like, at all. He’s committing the classic zero sum fallacy.

As a matter of law foreigners may only pass our borders with permission of the State Dept. and they may apply for citizenship and for temporary resident status or for refugee status at the pleasure of our laws as applied and adjudicated by our State Dept. As a soverign nation USA can close and seal our own borders any time we so choose...Mexico can do that too. Mexico can prevent central American people from entering their country anytime - but they don't want to do that.
