- It sounds awful and it is true but it doesn’t seem so scary when you take into account that it is the average figure of the number of deaths from flu in an average winter in the UK. So, just to help keep a sense of perspective, these are the number of deaths from flu in the UK from 2014 - 2018

Average = 21115
To help counter-balance the fear-mongering and calm people down, if you take the average figure of 21115 and break that down further into days, of say, 120 covering 4 months of winter, you get an average daily death toll of 176 people. Now, if that figure was being announced every day in the media, it would sound horrific.
Globally, the World Health Organisation estimates that the flu kills between 290,000 and 650,000 people every year. So, just taking the lower figure of 290,000 and breaking it down again to an average of 120 days; that amounts to a global daily death toll of 2416 which again would terrify everyone if it was announced daily on the news.
Like all flu’s, the figures will start low and then gradually increase over the course of the winter until it hits a peak figure, after which it starts to decline.
The recovery rate from coronavirus is approximately 97%.
