I do think that gormlessness is now such an integral part of our education system and is facilitated by our welfare system to the point where the public in general have effectively ceased to think for themselves. Anyone able to look beyond the immediate and actually choose a rational course of action must feel like an alien in a world of automatons. Those with the ability to analyse a situation, make a judgement and weigh up potential solutions used to be valued in the workplace but are now seen as negative trouble makers and what is valued is the willingness to sign up to the latest core values or mission statement. Politicians leap from one decision to another, business thinks short term and the media simply want a headline.
I am sure that much of the criticism about things like Boris’s Coronavirus updates are by those who simply want to criticise ie the media, Labour supporters etc but there does seem to be little doubt that common sense is not in vogue and that stupidity is on the rise.
