Cancellation is one thing but Taking drugs, robbery or any petty crimes does not mean he should die in the custody of people who are paid to protect and serve the citizens.
Also, if the police did their actual jobs and prosecuted criminals and there wasn’t so much red tape/loop holes and Politics involved, people wouldn’t have to resort to cancellation and vigilante culture.

Either way it is irrelevant to the case and the principles involved. Empathy is definitely not what we need because justice is blind and everyone is innocent until proven guilty. On one side we have people saying we should have empathy for his past and likely future victims and on the other side we have people saying we should have empathy for a victim of racism. Empathy is a poor place from which to assess the facts in a case.

I would argue that one of the tragedies that this story exposes is that people have not been taught from an early age how to put their emotions to work for themselves and society instead of being victims of emotions they cannot control. Not every victim of racism becomes a drug addict. Not every white person has the privilege of not becoming a drug addict.

Now detractors will say that controlling for social economic status halfed the correlation. That is misleading because the only thing that is relevant is life outcome and delayed gratification. Since the original study freewill has been under assault because it doesn't align with the current narrative that failure is a result of forces beyond the individuals control. It is also out of alignment with a misguided understanding of evolution that doesn't recognize the role of culture. It doesn't help that religion has been under assault as well. The reality of religious dogma aside it did create the abstract space for freewill to reside in. Failure to recognize how freewill is an integral component of civilization is dangerous.

From his recent video posts he had turned away from that life and was warning others to NOT do the same and to NOT go his route. He spoke openly about his drug use and how it ruined his entire life. When someone is contrite or attempting to change their life then yes it is bad form to dig up the past. It's even more bad form to do so after they are dead and cannot defend themselves. Part of why cancel culture is so immoral is the lack of forgiveness, mercy, and temperance on the part of the mob that attempts to cancel someone.

The problem with modern society is the lack of empathy and forgiveness to everyone versus a select group of people.

As to Floyd...whether he was getting his life back together or not has NOTHING to do with the fact that police today have been armed with military weapons but without military constraints on the use of force. When Marines in Iraq had stricter ROEs during wartime than police in America have with private citizens on the street that is a huge problem. Shaming Floyd doesn't change the fact that the cops were wrong regardless of what dirt people can dig up on him today.
