Umm, cos his name was Valentine? Wouldn't make much sense to sign it your Butch or your Stanislaus.
Valentine was a monk in the monastery at Ochrid in what is now Montenegro. The Abbot sent him to tutor a rich man's daughter to gain income for the community. The rich man hired a monk because his daughter was blind and the secular tutors refused to teach her. Valentine taught her mathematics and rhetoric without the benefit of her sight. In discussions of the scriptures she challenged Valentine, "If Jesus gave sight to blind people in the past, why can He not do so now?" Valentine went to his cell to fast a pray for the will of God and when he returned, he laid his hands over her eyes and prayed that God would give the young lady her sight. And so He did give the girl the ability to see.
The lady then insisted that Valentine marry her and enlisted her father to use his influence to make it so. Valentine did agreed only if it was a marriage sans consumation, for he had sworn a vow of chastity, poverty and obedience. The lady entered into a women's monastery, what the Western Church calls a convent, shortly after the wedding vows and got her education in the faith through correspondence with her husband, Valentine. Because he was married to her, Valentine considered himself to be hers in all ways, and signed his letters, "Your Valentine," as a profession of the conjugal commitment that he made.
There was genuine love between the two even without the physical expression so common in human marriage. And the entirety of the Gospel was carefully explained in Valentine's letters over the course of their lives.
@dmatic Hagiagraphy is the biography of a saint, a holy one of God. It comes from the Greek words hagios, meaning holy, and graphe, writing. The life of Valentine of Ochrid is quite fascinating because the only miracles attributed to his prayers are the ones pertaining to the lady he married.
