So Taylor Swift, the latest poster-child for the “Shut-up and sing,” movement has gone on record urging people to support equal pay for the Woman’s National Soccer Team.
Why?
Is there some Papal Bull declaring interest in Women’s Soccer to be a sacrament? The question answers itself. After multiple World Cup wins, no one knows much of anything about women’s soccer. Did you know there are nine teams in the national league. Neither did I. Neither do most people, since none of their games are broadcast on TV and can only be streamed on Yahoo Sports.
Don’t want to be harsh, here, but no one cares. This is not a value judgment or an effort to be cruel, and if you want to babble about “the patriarchy,” and systemic misogyny, save your breath. It’s simply about the market.
Here’s the beauty of the market: it’s an idiot. It has no opinion, no agenda, no ability to coerce outcomes or manipulate attitudes. The market is a simple input/output system, action/reaction If you want to set value for a commodity or a service, put it out there in the market place and see what people will pay for it. No government planning commission needed. No opinions called for. No politics required.
In the case of women’s soccer, the fact that 2nd rate celebrities are being enlisted to try to shame us into faking an interest that simply isn’t warranted tells you all you need to know.
Nobody cares. Cope. You want equal pay? How about equal results? As the lovely Omar told us in a vastly different context, it’s all about the Benjamins, baby.
Or is woman’s soccer now supposed to be another welfare give-away?
