It's ok ...to be white

The problem is that so many people don’t understand what racism is. They insist that the meaning is being “unfair” to them or somebody that isn’t white.

While working for IBM in South Carolina, I witnessed all types of racism. Of course I saw an elderly whit woman (school crossing guard) yell disrespectfully at a black woman that was walking across the street outside a block from the crosswalk.

Then I went to work where we finally stopped the hiring freeze and had hired 35 people (99% were black) to answer phones and enter computer problems into a database so that the 13 remaining technicians could call them back and walk them through fixing the problems. We all worked together on the same floor, so I listened in on neighboring calls to note if I could give them a quick resolution or have them transfer me the calls to handle between my own calls.

When I would hear the frustration of the black lady in the next cubical get too obvious and, I would intervene (as a working supervisor). I had to remind her (and others) that frustrations were normal, but we need to handle them professionally and certainly never speak disrespectfully to the customer or about them, especially not loud enough for other callers to hear.

When I heard this black woman slam the phone down and say in a voice loud enough for my caller and other callers to hear, “if these dumb guys can’t talk English right, they should just go back to Mexico”, I told her that she needed to keep her prejudice under control and not share that with the customers we are trying to help. She then said, “I can’t be prejudiced, I’m black!” I told her that even that statement demonstrates her prejudice, but we needed her to keep her prejudice to herself if she wanted to continue to work there.
