Tom Steyer was back on the stage tonight, answering a call heard only by himself. No one engaged him; he scarcely moved the needle even when making a forceful call for reparations and blaming racism on everything. They all gave him a “Dude, aren’t you in the wrong bar,” kind of look. In a crowd of socialists (and, let’s admit it, one Communist) having enough problems accommodating one billionaire who they sold out to in 2018, Steyer comes across as a billionaire too far, the guy who not only doesn’t belong on the debate stage, you get the feeling that without his money, he wouldn’t belong much anywhere.
