George Will is a never Trumper, and he does a very good job talking about how the Republican party is mortgaging it's future to support a man who can win today. I support several things Trump has done, but one must admit he has done harm to the conservative message with Democratic spending habits and his protectionist trade policies.

Opening or widening up its prototype, it will find new Republicans with great potential. Nikki Haley should be a good 2020 candidate along with dozens of successful business people with no political office held.

Congress controls spending. Trump's biggest mistake was letting the Republican House of Representatives off the hook in the budget battle and the wall funding: 1.) They would have been easier to manipulate, because Paul Ryan has no spine 2.) He could have asserted himself as the head of the Republican Party amidst the Mueller Investigation in the swamp. That was his last chance to control Congress and influence the budget. The other side of this coin is that Trump needed to rebuild the military to recover from 8 years of Obama, so he went the path of least resistance and got as much money as he could to fund the Defense Department. Trump has four more years to control spending for a more efficient government. A strong military and secure borders will reduce American budget needs by a significant amount. Make no mistake, Donald Trump saved the Republican Party and he and his family are the future of the party. Republicans have shown little fiscal restraint since the 1990's, let's not put that on Trump. Peace and prosperity are the cornerstones for fiscal responsibility and that is what President Trump has procured.

If you actually weigh the stuff Will says, it is often not tethered in good logic, nor fact. Much like the New York Times, he must weave a fantastically complex and labyrinthine tale to justify his ramblings. They are actually fairly easy to disassemble if you take them piece by piece. You only have to find one flaw to destroy his argument. He often gives you more than that.

@mccarthy Wickard v Filburn was the first step onto the slippery slope in 1942. Segregation in 1968 followed, The LRRA in 1981, and the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) in 2010 all were direct assaults on the principles of separation of powers, the Commerce Clause, rights of search and seizure, First Amendment, and even the presumption of innocence, among others. The Constitution as written is now almost completely vacant.
