"The federal government gave big internet service providers, like CenturyLink and Frontier Communications, billions of dollars to improve broadband access. The companies failed to deliver, but were never punished or asked to pay back the public money." [revealnews.org]

Frontier is filing for bankruptcy. Frontier bought Verizons copper, they were going to offer a 4 wire Internet service. As Frontier got into the infrastructure they bought from Verizon they found out it was in much worse shape than they thought.

That's why I believe in a government limited to it's proper Constitutional powers.

“I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents.”

"The government of the United States is a definite government, confined to specified objects. It is not like the state governments, whose powers are more general. Charity is no part of the legislative duty of the government."
James Madison

As much as we might complain and screech about welfare Queens with 5 children, each with a different Father, that is actually a pittance compared to corporate welfare and the outrageous cost of our military industrial complex.

I'd rather these projects be done directly by the federal government or at least planned and contracted out.

@WilyRickWiles Why the government? Why can't business handle their own business? Why put taxpayers on the hook for someone else's endeavor?

@Tycho Because public goods and infrastructure aren't profitable on the timescale of a business, at least not without creating perverse incentives.

@WilyRickWiles The government is allowed to build postal roads... not help create or upgrade businesses.

I don't know what "public goods" is supposed to refer to. And what does "profitable on the timescale of business" even mean. If it's profitable they will build it. That's what they do.

Again, anything else is un-Constitutional, by which I mean ILLEGAL. That includes subsidies, bale-outs, buy-outs, and foreign aid. If you want to alter the Constitution then get to work. I'll work against you. But apparently the U.S. Constitution doesn't mean much anymore.

@Tycho It's only illegal in an alternate libertarian reality. I think what I'm saying is pretty clear. To give an extreme example, if something takes a human lifetime to become profitable, a business isn't going to do it. That thing might still have enough value of some sort to society to be worth doing.

@WilyRickWiles It's illegal if the Constitution doesn't specifically allow the government to do it. And profitability isn't the government's concern.

Can you name a project that has taken more than a lifetime to produce "some sort of value to society?" And why can't private business provide it?

@Tycho Examples: Roads, the phone system, the internet, nuclear power, defense projects, education, health care, and finance.

And I didn't say that they took "more than a lifetime to produce 'some sort of value to society.'" I said that they took more than a lifetime to be profitable to a business, but might still provide some sort of value to society.

@WilyRickWiles None of these took more than a lifetime to become profitable. And every one of these could, and many were, done by private industry.

Roads: not a government project. The highway system was created to ensure the rapid movement of troops and equipment, but people have been building roads throughout history. And it didn't take more than a lifetime...

The phone system: Not a government project, and didn't take more than a lifetime...

The internet: A government/private industry project to ensure communications during and after nuclear war. Didn't take a lifetime...

Nuclear power: A government/private industry project. Didn't take more than a lifetime...

Education: Good grief, I'm not even going to bother with that one. Also didn't take a lifetime...

Healthcare and "finance": The same. Again, why bother. Been around for millennia... Didn't take more than a lifetime...

Nothing you mentioned took more than a lifetime - one might say they're ongoing projects anyway - like Ford Motor Company or Westinghouse. But didn't take more than a lifetime to become profitable. Hell son, many of the people who worked on these things are still alive!
