So, the armed security campus guard debate has been one I've gone back and forth on. One of the biggest calls for it came from a want for extra protection due to mass shootings. Unfortunatly, when dealing with those specific cases, chances are having an armed security guard won't prevent it. (The mentality of a mass shooter often times doesn't hinge around a stable end game. Many mass shooting cases have ended in death by cop) But, having an armed guard could help save lives.
As far as the day to day activities, they mostly revolve around the mundane. Parking tickets, intoxication, disorderly, small fights, etc. The need to be armed on campus, in my opinion, is only to be prepared for the worst. It's not the same as day to day in local law enforcement where the situation arises more frequently.
The Washington case was pretty far from the norm. After getting into a bar fight with friends, he was shot at 17 times rapidly (9 hitting). He did have a gun on him, but it's unclear if it fell from his waist, if he was reaching for it, or even if he intended to use it. Honestly, from what I've read and seen, it was an overreaction and questionable.
Unarmed local law enforcement I'm still against. But, campus security doesn't seem to be needed. They began arming their guards in 2014/15 and then in 2018 Washinton was killed. I think it's more likely Washinton would not have been shot that many times if the guards had to deal with more situations like this on a daily basis like local law enforcement officers have to do.
The Oregonian stated that local law enforcement will be called in armed police needed cases on campus. (Which is another topic considering they are doing all this defunding/ abolish stuff) I haven't seen anything in the works for the misfit community service baseball bat gang. But, I'll look it up.
