I've done it too. You are quite right, the burning smell was quite the interesting experience.
I totally agree the divisive abortion debate has been a complete and utter waste of time.
Pregnancy is a 100% preventable condition. The meaningful discussion here is how to start effectively reducing the demand for abortion with measures to reduce unwanted pregnancy.

I've said it once, I've said it 1000 times.
Comprehensive sexual education in school. Get rid of abstinence-only programs. Set regulations on what can be taught - no more "condoms cause cancer" nonsense.
Free birth control, or at least insurance covered birth control. No more religious exemption for contraceptives, especially when there is a host of actual medical issues BC treats other than preventing pregnancy.
Expand social safety nets for prospective mothers, including pre-natal care, and cover expenses of medical treatment if she wants to give away the child.
Raise minimum wage so that a mother can actually afford to live and feed her family, rather than choosing to end a pregnancy or risk her other children starving.
End adoption discrimination. No more denying adoption to same-sex couple or single parents.
I'll make you a deal: we can have a conversation about eliminating religious exemptions once you stop incentivizing welfare queens from squeezing out more puppies in order to get more benefits.
@JacksonNought abstinence may not be a practical alternative, but it is effective when practiced and certainly worthy of discussion.
@GeeMac does abstinence work? Of course. Has it been scientifically proven that abstinence-only programs lead to more unwanted pregnancies, while fact-based comprehensive sex-ed reduces unwanted pregnancies? Also yes. We know that drilling abstinence into people's heads does not work, even among some of the most rabid Evangelicals. Just look at Bristol Palin.
