I was under the impression that Kabul fell to people that have a moral code that they have lived by longer than the USA has existed.

Not very stable conclusion. It will fall flat on its head. Republicans do not deal with terrorists and certainly not kill innocent civilians or army men,

I remember a WW2 Navy vet saying that Carter was trying to pull a political fast one and cement a re-election with the failed attempt at rescue of the captured embassy personnel in Tehran, which was by the way in total violation of all world ambassador privileges.
No one would have condemned the US if we would have strafed their country with B52's back then, from the clear act of war. But Carter was trying to be an appeasing peacemaker or a pacifist after seeing first hand the devastation of the lingering after effects of war in the Pacific WW2.
