For my fellow Christians; I’m curious what you think about recognizing holidays of other faiths. i get the sentiment of wanting to be courteous and respectful but should we wish people a happy “x”? Many of these holidays have a religious subtext. while yes it can just be a day of remembrance for things we are blessed with but for instance today is Diwali. sure it is basically a day of being thankful if you look at what the holiday is really about it is more than that. it is also about the Hindu gods and things that occurred with them according to the Hindu faith. do you see recognizing or bringing attention to these holidays is giving credibility to that religion? personally seeing a Christian bring attention to the holiday would feel mike they are giving some legitimacy to the other religion and stating that there are multiple paths to God through any religion not just Christ. i would say certain holidays like Hanukkah are fine as while it is religious in nature we share a history with Judaism and it is about recognizing a miracle from God. something like the Yom Kippur and Rosha shana however are about forgiveness of sin however and for Christians we no longer need to celebrate those as we recognize Jesus as Messiah and therefore there is no need for those days anymore.

You know what gives credibility to a religion? Whether it is true or not. And, that's not up to us.

As for celebrating other holidays, I look at Paul in Athens who told the Greeks that he knew who their unknown god was. We are all searching for truth. As for Diwali (from wiki) "Diwali symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance" " Well I gotta tell you, I'm all about that too! God gives you a window like that, you should drive a truck through it.

You are just being churlish not being willing to wish another "Happy X" on their religious holiday (assuming it is real, and not made up by the FBI or some other crappola).
That said, let's not forget that many of the values expressed by the founders in establishing this country are based upon JudeoChristian (sp?) values. If that gives a visitor or citizen-to-be real heartburn, don't stay here. We are under no obligation to change our ways to make you feel more comfortable. You can practice what you want so long as it violates no existing law. Beyond that, I will give respect out of being civilized, not because I think your religion is in any way better. Let's not confuse those issues.

If I were really a Christian, and made an effort to live in Christian community, I would avoid the non-Christians and non-Christian holidays. BUT, in reality, I'm both of the world and very much IN it. I don't celebrate the holidays of other traditions but I try to suffer them where others do.

Happy Christdiurnal to you and everyone. If people insist on removing Christ from Christmas, then I will remove the mas from the name. Instead of applying for a night, diurnal means re-occurring every day.

The primary religion of the founders of this nation was Christian, anyone emigrating here should have known that, if they didn't I am sure it became apparent in short order!!!!!
SO, get over it all ready, or stay home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For me it’s easy. We’ve always wished people a “Merry Christmas” throughout the history of our country and in many countries throughout the world until the haters of Christ decided to turn the season I to an opportunity to cause trouble for Christians (and many non Christians that just want to celebrate a joyous season of giving). “Merry Christmas” has never been an attempt to shove Christianity down the throats of others. We need to get back to the joy of the season and the innocent wishes that come along with “Merry Christmas”, so let’s all abandon the political/anti Christian “Merry X-mas” that turns a joyful wish into a declaration of war and a demand for loyalty to the side of hatred.

BTW, I also have no problem with people wishing me a happy Chanika or whatever good wish with which they want to greet me or even seeing people walking around with an ash smear on their foreheads on Ash Wednesday or wearing a Judi skullcap on their head.

IMO

see with that i have no problem with wishing people happy “x” if it is the holiday you celebrate. like if someone who is of another faith wishes me a happy hanukah so be it. but if another a Christian were to wish me a happy “x” and it is a holiday of another religion that is where i think it gets pretty dicey.
