In fact, her character, I am sorry to say, seems rather shallow. Winston's own observations of what the Party was doing had changed him into a revolutionary--both theoretically and practically. Julia despised the Party in a sensuous way, loving to use her pragmatic wit to break the rules for personal pleasure. Unlike Winston, she cared little for politics and had no theoretical foundation for her opposition. Both are tragic characters, and both betray one another. Winston was confronted with rats, his greatest fear. What her greatest fear might be is left unspecified. It would appear to me, however, that the writers will have to invent a new character for Julia in order to make the audience care about her for her own sake. I cared about Julia for Winston's sake. Aside from her oppression, which both Winston and she shared, there was not much in Julia's character from Orwell's book that elicited my sympathy. To make compelling viewing, the writers must change that. But if they do a "feminist" take on Julia's character, the story and the film will drop stillborn. I will be pleasantly surprised if that does not happen. But the very idea that great literature is not good enough unless we switch races, sexes, gender identification, and the like has become tedious. We can't seem to create new stories with new characters and settings; instead, we have to monkey around with existing and well known stories.

You filled out the character of Julia in your comment better than Orwell did in the original, maybe you should write the new version.
@Andyman I don't think so. Orwell knew what he was doing. Like C. S. Lewis in That Hideous Strength and Aldous Huxley in Brave New World, Orwell was warning us that our direction was moving toward tragedy and away from freedom. How each conceived what that tragedy would be like differed. Huxley thought we would be overthrown by our passions and willingly submit to the future dystopia. Orwell thought we would be reduced to slaves by a military boot on our throats. Lewis thought that we would seek to replace our humanity with an inhuman replacement. But all thought that a tragic autocracy loomed in the future. My feeling is that a "reimagination" of Orwell's work from Julia's point of view will probably disfigure Orwell's point of view. We will see, but that is what I fear.

How binary of you. How about "Long Live Big Caring Unspecified Relative with Fluid Gender and Racial ID and with a Feminist Orientation." That is what the crowd should be screaming in the theater. That would make Twitter swoon with delight and Orwell turn in his grave. But Twitter would get the attention since Orwell is not on the network.
