I can’t understand why leftists — the same people who think Canada is “progressive” — insist that asking voters for ID is racist voter suppression. I voted by mail, and in person in Canada, and no one votes without first being vetted. Voting by mail on the provincial level required submission of a digital passport or drivers license plus a facial video to match to the digital documents.
Strong vetting protects integrity at the polls; and the left knows that, despite what they say publicly. The end game here, hand-in-hand with open borders, is establishment of the right for non-citizens and illegals to vote. As the left says, “Vote early. vote often.”

Your description sounds like absentee voting. A necessary process for those who simply cannot vote in person: elderly in nursing home, soldiers overseas, etc. My wife did that since she got tired of showing up at a local poll in the wee hours in Nov. (i.e., she is a bot spoiled).
Anyhoo, the perversion of that started when CaCaLand tested out voter harvesting -- supposedly on behalf of those who couldn't be bothered even trying to find a poll station. What was really going on was illegal aliens voting. A party apparatchik (sp?) would go around to supposedly valid voters, convince them how to mark the ballot (mostly by bribing), and then take a bunch of ballots to a real poll station to be counted. No ID involved. No attempt to validate the legitimacy of either the voter or the ballot.
The convenience of the WuhanFlu and political shutdowns super-charged this. Now, ballots were printed out for anyone on the rolls. And, in concert with this CaCaLAnd had implemented legal driving licenses for illegal aliens wherein they not only got a photo ID but were automatically registered with a political party -- care to guess which one?
So, in addition to printing out and mailing ballots for deaders, emigrees, illegals, etc.; this provided the opportunity to print blank ballots -- like the ones found during the recent sham recall of CaCaLand's Guv'na.
This is the perversion of mailin voting in at least all of the swing states in the 2020 election, the ones controlled by blue Guv'nas and the same ones that came up with tens of thousands of "mailins" after the polls were closed and the poll observers told to go home.
This is the process that will be used going forward to preserve the ones in power.

Never think that a Cacaland liberal is any less corrupt than a Democrat. They are actually are way more sneaky and covert about pushing the deep state party of L.
My point is that security and vetting is not racist as suggested by the left. No ballot should ever be mailed out or accepted without verification.
Of course the US system is far more complicated with a patchwork of different state laws and procedures. Because the Canada’s national elections are federally regulated by an independent agency, Elections Canada,, ballots and procedures are uniform across the country. The campaign runs a very brief 36 to 59 days, unlike two years or more in the US. Paper ballots are hand counted locally and results are usually known the same night.
