Protesters against vaccine passports threw mud on LREM (political party) deputy Stéphane Claireaux in front of his home on the French island of Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon because of his support for vaccine passports.

St. Pierre and Miquelon. A deputy attacked in front of his house by anti-sanitary pass

Stéphane Claireaux, elected representative of the Republic in March, received multiple projectiles in front of his house Sunday, January 9, 2022 while passing in his neighborhood a demonstration against the health pass on the island located in the North Atlantic.

"The attack on Stéphane Claireaux at his own home during the demonstration against the health pass is absolutely unacceptable," denounced Sunday the Minister of the Sea, Annick Girardin.

She relayed on Twitter a video where we see the MP for St. Pierre and Miquelon receive handfuls of seaweed thrown on him by demonstrators, followed by stone throwing. The elected representative of the National Assembly does not seem to be injured on the spot on these images of a few seconds where you can hear several people in the crowd laughing at what is happening.

"An elected official of the Republic lynched in front of his family home. Images of unprecedented violence, deeply shocking. No debate can justify this outburst. Total support to the MP," tweeted Stéphane Lecornu, Minister of Overseas France.

A tense context in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon

"The images are deeply shocking," said Annick Girardin. "Those who call for violence must answer for their actions. The support of Senator Stéphane Artano to this mobilization, in addition to discrediting him, demonstrates once again his lack of responsibility", she adds.

The accused senator, who sits in the center-left RDSE group (with notably PRG elected officials) in the High Assembly, published a statement on Facebook in which he condemns the facts. He recalls that "no one can support the inadmissible actions of which the deputy was victim".

The island of St. Pierre and Miquelon, which has a population of 6,000, is facing an explosion of positive cases of Covid-19 and contact cases identified since the end of 2021.

More and more attacks on elected officials

The president of the National Assembly, Richard Ferrand, said he had called Stéphane Claireaux: "I assured him of my personal support and the solidarity of the National Assembly in the face of the intolerable aggression he suffered at his home while proposing dialogue," he wrote on his Twitter account.

Attacks and death threats have multiplied in recent weeks, mainly against members of the majority who approved this week, in first reading, the bill transforming the health pass into a vaccine pass. Several of them have published on social networks the death threats they have received and announced their intention to file a complaint
