One sign of good journalism is that it questions the prevailing narrative. Common knowledge is mostly wrong because it tends to drift downstream towards simplistic narratives that are emotionally appealing. That is why whenever a topic about which you have deep knowledge is portrayed in the popular culture it always seems simplistic to the point of being wrong, full of tropes and common misconceptions.
An investigative journalist, however, should dig beneath the surface. They should talk to experts, especially those who have reason to doubt the narrative, and find out what the consensus of expert opinion is. They could also try to explain the narrative – why do people believe X when experts say Y?

Yup. I guess that is how it went. The so called conservatives were used to FOX because it was teelling them what they wanted to hear about the democrats. Same way CNN does for dems. So when the whole Russia vs NATO/US started they turned to what they trust and that was FOX and FOX run by neocons and establishment stooges, wanted to cater to its audience. Telling the truth would lose the audience because especially the boomers grew up on FOX news and cold war rhetoric, so that is what they wanted to hear. Russia bad and Fox delivered, so when it goes back to domestic politics and midterms they can keep the same audience.
I have a feeling that when republicans win in the midterms they will be even more hawkish against the Russians to avoid taking responsibility of foxing domestic mess. They will just play Russian Man Bad narrative on loop, same way Orange Man Bad was played by the other side.
"Dems are bad" gets them to win the midterms. "Russian Man Bad" keeps them in power but they don't have to deal with the mess from the democrats.
