This was definitely a "vibe" for the day (the '60s) at the height of the hippie movement. Throngs of young people (baby boomers mostly) were migrating to California - mostly to L A and San Francisco.
This song is not about "going back home" - it is about setting out on a new direction of your life. Escape the cold, gray oppressing doldrums of their lives...searching for a feeling of being free - unfettered by daily responsibilities of working for a living...The hippies that did indeed flock to LA and San Fran expected (more or less) to find warmth, acceptance, love, unburdened living...
They were for the most part mis-led by that narrative - because as it turned out NOTHING in life is FREE. Living hand to mouth on the streets in a warm temperate climate is only moderately, marginally "not as bad" as living that way in the harsher colder climates east of California.
Of course the hippies brought their "drug culture" with them. Crime, both serious and petty exploded. If was from that infectious petri dish of human culture that the Manson Family sprung up and there were a lot more evil, sick, twisted predatorial people there besides Charles Manson and his literally speaking rag tag losers, societal dropouts, drug addicted, larcenous, murderous little group of disciples. And we all know what they got up to.
Nevertheless, the music of the era was great to listen, and to fantasize about a proverbial "better way" in California.
Because they had never known hardship - never had to work for their privileged way of living too many baby boomers took the narrative literally - thinking there was something better - a better way of life waiting for them in California. There wasn't.
There were two driving factors that fueled that movement: First there was the Sexual Revolution (free love and all of that nonsense) which was fire to the millions of baby boomers come of age. Second was the war in Vietnam - particularly the Draft. Men (young men barely 18 and 19 and some in their twenties) were being drafted in greater numbers as the LBJ administration kept escalating the war. Young people don't want to go off to fight a war on foreign soil when they see that the goings on in Vietnam did not seem to be a threat to them - especially when they have "come of age) at the intensely hot (sexually speaking) era of "Free Love". They wanted to stay home and fuck their brains out, get high, generally have "fun" with little or no sense of responsibility. "Sex without consequences) is an extremely powerful elixir when you're 16, 17, 18...
As I said above - the music that came out of that era was great - but the overarching narrative of it all was, well, just false. And we are still feeling the negative repercussions of it to this very day.
