I'm sure that not everyone who wants to move away from fossil fuels is disingenuous. Even Gore and Kerry are stupid enough to believe the non sense they spew. In the scientific community my experience has been that most believe Global Warming is real but may have reservations about how serious a problem it is, hard to tell since being a denier is a good way to end a career. I have met very few Washington Bureaucrats that I would expect to bright enough to know one way or the other.

As to corporations it seems to me it is an easy way to make money going sustainable. The user base seems sufficiently convince global warming is real that they can sell higher utility cost to consumers. The oil and gas companies were always in a hard spot because of unsecured foreign suppliers and the need to keep those same suppliers onboard with the petro dollar. Besides they faced so much opposition from the public every time they wanted to drill, open up a refinery or build a new power plant. Other corporations have been able to use regulation to push smaller competitors out of the way.

It would be nice to move away from fossil fuels for a variety of reasons. Nobody likes smog or being down stream of a coal plant. The public is scared of even the word nuclear. There are even practical reasons such as a single electric grid instead of a diversity of energy suppliers would be easier to maintain. That said we are decades away from a renewable energy supply that could replace fossil fuel based fertilizers, transportation and heavy equipment including farming equipment.

The worst aspect of the current plans is the loss of freedom of movement and housing options for the poor and middle class. The clean technology looks like it will remain well beyond their economic means. Putting them at the mercy of less than ethical characters such as those at Black Rock and the people that control the energy grid. The upper half of the social economic ladder are probably thrilled that the "smelly Walmart shoppers" will be stuck in their smelly little houses and off the beaches. Our society is full of people that secretly hate the poor and are jealous of the rich. They are a lot of the problem because they can weather the economic problems caused by the authoritarians in an effort to have complete control over the population. We have an entrenched petite nobility problem despite being something of a democracy.

It looks like it's going to take a complete economic meltdown for things to change and to push the incompetent and crazies like Gore, Kerry, Schwab, Soros, etc. out of the way to a sane and competent plan for sustainability. To get there we need massive improvements to the infrastructure. Roads, electrical grids, sewers, water, agriculture, housing, and every other aspect of the practical are in disrepair and aging fast. Almost every city government is both incompetent and corrupt. They should be the first to go but the poor are easily bought and middle class indifferent. The normal maintenance of society to long ignored.

I lived in KCMO most of my life and I can tell you their isn't enough money in the world to pay for the delayed maintenance that city has built up over the last 50 years. For even longer than that they have ignored infrastructure problems and focused on shinny new things. To an honest observer the city staff look like lunatics. They promised the population that KC would compete with Houston for tourists. Their projects took the same form as the Roman Colosseum. Stadiums and exhibition halls, under used airports, and other mega projects that could not sustain themselves let alone contribute to paying for practical infrastructure.

The point I'm trying to make is that our problems started long before anyone every heard of the WEF. They are just the vultures picking at the bones of a once dynamic civilization.
